    Intro thread here:

    http://www.xjbikes.com/Forums/viewtopic ... tml#155463

Just to summarize the above, this is only my second motorcycle. My first motorcycle was really just a beater/learner and was sold shortly after purchase. So, I am definitely a n00b to the whole motorcycle world.

    Specs

    1992 Yamaha SECA II XJ600
    28k miles w/ 1k on rebuilt motor
    Custom lower fairing
    Custom mounted mirrors
Poor quality flat black rattle can paint job
    Yoshimura exhaust

I picked up this SECA II for a pretty decent deal, but some of the previous owners had absolutely no care for their work on this bike. Who ever painted it did absolutely no prep work, no masking, no cleaning, and took no care what so ever. They painted 99% of the motorcycle. Frame, fairings, wiring harness, motor, turn signals, wheels, etc... horrible. Overspray on everything... even the turn signal bulbs!?!?!?

In addition to this, the wiring is quite possibly the worst I've ever seen (I've had a lot of rigged stereos in some of my previous car purchases). They added front and rear carbon fiber look turn signals and front LED lights, now don't get me wrong these are great for extra visibility and all, but their wiring job consisted of burning the rubber off of an existing wire then wrapping and twisting the frayed ends of the new wire around the factory exposed wire. No tape, no crimps, no heatshrink...

Despite all of this, the bike runs and rides like a champ, has new tires, and everything is nice and straight from what I can tell, which likely means no hard drops have occurred.

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------

    Plans

Restore frame to factory gloss red
    Restore rearsets
    Restore lower fairing
    Replace upper fairing
    Replace gas tank
    Replace tails plastics
    Replace passenger handles
    Replace mirrors
    Replace turn signals
New headlight (has a BB size hole)
Track & fix all wiring gremlins

    Color Scheme

    Red Frame
Gloss black tank ( no text)
    Aspen White Upper
    Aspen White Lower
    Aspen White Fender
    Aspen White L/R Tail
    Gloss Black Center Tail
    Red Calipers
    Gold Wheels

That's about it for now, but I am sure I will think of more as I go.

    Day 1

I removed the fairings and tail to see what kind of mess was hidden underneath. What I found was a bit shocking...

One of the previous owners actually sprayed the entire bike flat back. I'm talking motor, trans, chain, sprocket, wheels, part of the frame, wiring harness, connectors, some bulbs have over spray, etc...

I located a tank and tail pieces here in town and am going to look at them tonight. They are listed for $30 for everything and are supposedly ready for paint, score!

If it is truly rattle can paint, you can use gasoline to strip it. It should not effect the paint underneath (if there is primer between the flat black and the original paint, then the gas may need more time to get through the primer or may not get through it at all). Something to try...

Exactly what I was going to do! I'd be willing to bet it's a black primer and not even a proper flat black base coat. I'm actually glad the the bonehead that painted it didn't prep the motorcycle, just makes it easier for me to fix

    I appreciate the tip, though!

if you are going to replace the fairings would you be interested in letting me have the old ones cheap or for shipping costs? the bike I am restoring for my son (he is 11 so I have a few years to complete it) was ridden HARD and put away wet many many times and all the plastics have cracks or chunks missing.
I am also looking for right hand controls that the mirror attaches to they broke that off one of the times they dropped it.

    here is my projects

HEY! I have the same bike as you guys :)

I like the way that bike looked all black (not the part where it was poorly done but the concept)

BTW are you gonna keep those mirrors? I'll give you my stock, sunbeaten mirrors lol

I have a 92 as well. Have any of you looked into other compatable wheels? I want to put on a dual front brake set up, and a rear I can put a 160ish tire on for handeling improvments.

What kind of mirrors were the custom ones you had one there originally?
    Thanks!
