Gas Cap Lock - Removal?

Does anyone know how to pop the lock out of a gas cap? I've got it off and removed the plate, but it does not slide out. I don't want to break anything, so I thought it best to ask before I start trying to use any force.

You can pop out just the lock mechanism on the gas cap and swap it. I picked up a matching set for everything by the seat lock, so I am in the process if changing locks. It was cheaper than going to a locksmith.

To pop the lock out of the gas cap, you need to remove the cap. Then remove the mechanism that has the two fingers that secure the cap to the tank. You will then see the two prongs on the lock itself. There is a flat washer and o-ring that need to be removed at the end of the lock. Be careful with the o-ring. Once you get those out of the way, you will see a brass keeper. Take a jewelers screwdriver and push the keeper in and slide the lock out toward the top of the cap. When installing the new lock, place the lock in position and push the keeper in. Once you get the lock in past the keeper, slide the key in so that it will compress all of the other brass pins. Now, it's easy to slide the lock all the way in and get it set.

Item of caution. The brass pins that the key moves are spring loaded. So, you need to be very careful at all times that you don't let one of those pins go flying.

So, if you have to replace your gas cap, you can replace the lock and not have to add a key to your chain.

 

Or if the key styles are the same (there are a few styles) you pop the lock - insert the new key and file the pins flat to the barrel - an easy rekey - costs nothing and functions fine.
