Hello everyone, to be perfectly honest right off: i dont have a maxim, im actually in the process of making a golf cart..but i need some help with the engine first, its a 1982 750 i got a good deal on it on craigslist. it was the engine, the ignitor unit, and rectifier regulator from a wrecked bike. I have to somehow figure out the wiring to them myself though..thats my problem right now.

I have a few wiring diagrams and have figured out the rectifier regulator but nothing shows me which wire goes to which terminal on the ignitor unit, i did a search, looked at a few bikes quickly, but can someone please show me which of the 4 neccessary wires from the 'distributor' go to the correct terminals on the ignitor, then which 4 wires go to which terminal on the coils..i just need the bare minimum wiring for the engine to run..thanks for any help you can give in advance!

Thanks for the replies..I used that wiring diagram to set up the wiring so far, the only problem im having is that i dont know which wire corresponds to which of the nine terminals ( bundle of five and four) on the ignitor unit. ive only had the engine for a week, its just on a stand right now, i just rebuilt the carbs, but ill take a few pictures when i can..

2slo, the wires are marked in the illustration above. Black, Orange, Grey, and Red/White. You should be able to work it out from there.

Hey everyone, i got sidetracked with rebuildig the engine a bit, but now im back to the wiring and getting no spark..i assume by now ive probably fried up the ignitor unit, but how is it supposed to be wired, i used the aforementioned diagram but when it comes to the ignitor unit i dont know whether its right or not, heres a drawing i have of how it was wired: then the four prongs on the right side of the ignitor go to the coils correct? thanks for straightening me out..

The wires coming from the units on the crank are paired Black, Orange and Grey, Brown..

Your photo is correct for the Orange, Grey, and Black (upper right hand of the six pins). You don't need anything else on the six-pin. The Lower left of the six pin on an stock bike is a B/W that disables the TCI when grounded. That's for the side stand safety.

    For the four pin,

    Upper Left = R/W (12V ignition power)
Upper Right = Orange to coil
    Lower Left = Black (Ground)
Lower Right = Grey to coil

thanks for the response! the one thing that i have a problem with though is that only three wires go to the six pin, shouldnt it be four, the four from the magnetic pickups on the crank?
Because the way its laid out now there is a "brown" wire on one of the pickups that isnt connected, should it be spliced into say the black or orange wire, is it acting as a ground or something? thats one of the things confusing me..

Sounds like the pickups you have don't match the TCI box. In the '82 750's there were only the three wires coming from the pickups (Orange for one, Grey for the other, and Black - shared common).

The '82 650 SECA's had a brown wire, which was tied to the black (they both still go to the same pin).

You can check with a meter to see if the upper right and lower right pins on the six pin connector are connected together. In the older TCI's (1980 - 81) both of those pins were ground and there were two separate blacks run from the pickups to them. It may be that the lower right pin is still a ground on the '82's, even though the stock wiring didn't use them. Otherwise, tie the black and brown together and connect them to the upper right pin.

Thanks SQL Guy, that did it! now i have spark, im just in the boat now of an engine not running, ive got a bunch of gas leaking out of carbs, and a sputter or two out of the carb (probably have the plugs 180 off, but it never wants to catch..

Try swapping EITHER the Orange and Grey wires on the 6-pin, OR the Orange and Grey wires on the 4-pin. See if that helps. (Clearly, it won't help with your floats/needles, but might get things running).
