Last weekend I did a valve adjustment on my XJ650. Thanks to Chacal for the supply of shims. Cylinders 1,2,and 3 were in tolerance. Both intake and exhaust on #4 were less than .10mm. Valves done for now.

Bought a Colorsync Pro sync gauge awhile back. This was my first opportunity to use it. Quickly discovered that it has to be held perfectly straight up and down or else the metal rods don't move freely. Couldn't find a place on the handlebars that would let it hang straight or let me see it from both sides of the bike. Enlisted the wife to hold the gauge while I turned the screws. She is usefull after all. :D Funny that # 4 cylinder was way out of whack just as the valves were. All 4 were reading different. Have them all reading about the same now. Wow  What A difference in the crispness now.

If I had it to do again, I would have gone and got a set of dial gauges instead. Have a friend who just got 4 gauges for about $12 apiece. Alot cheaper and they will work at any angle.

Maybe now it'll get better than 35mpg on a gallon of gas.

I bought a cheap one from Harbor freight. Just about any vacuum gauge works but you need to restrict the line. I'm using an aquarium air valve. If you don't the needle jumps too much.

I use a single meter and follow Ricks instructions.
