    Greetings All!

Well, after getting some great advice from the guys here on the forum, I took the plunge and bought an 1982 XJ650RJC Seca.

I sold my beloved V-Strom 650 a few weeks ago due to a back injury that made handling the tall, top-heavy beast just too much of a hassle. I was looking for something to fill the void that was: a) cheap, b) reliable, and c) fun. I've also always liked the do-everything go-anywhere practicality of an UJM, so when I spotted a bone-stock '82 XJ650 with about 28,000kms on the clock, I went for it.

It ran a little rough on the way home, and stalled if I didn't feed it a little throttle at red lights, but overall it was in good condition. I changed the oil and filter, shaft oil, and spark plugs. I also cleaned the air filter the best I could, as I’m waiting for a new filter that was back-ordered. Simply adjusted the idle speed to prevent the stalling, and now it runs great! Hard to believe that this bike is almost thirty years old!

Amongst the things on the “to-do” list, the bike needs a new Tach as the old one doesn’t work. If anybody knows where I could get one, please let me know. I’ll also be getting the seat re-upholstered as the vinyl is a bit torn-up. Although the paint is original, it’s pretty faded (especially on the front fender and rear “fairing” area behind the seat), it’s gone from the original red to a kind of metallic pink. I’m thinking of getting it painted, maybe a different colour. Any ideas? I really like the look of the beige-on-black Ducati GT1000... Not sure if that would work on the XJ though. :?

Anyhow, for now I’m just having a blast riding it!

    Cheers,
    Lucky

For the tach, make certain the current one is properly connected to the coils, that may be why it doesn't work.

For the seat, take a look at DIYMOTORCYCLESEAT.COM

You didn't mention the carbs ... those are the most common sources of rough running. If you don't know that the PO took good care/proper maintenance of the bike, you should take them apart and clean them.
