I visited my local specialist on Saturday as I needed some new brake pads. Unfortunately, he has pointed out a rather worrying problem:

My brake calipers are actually from an RD so are not the correct calipers for the bike. Whoever fitted them has placed washers in between the mountings in an effort to find the disc centres (SEE PIC)

Additionally, a small spacer has been put on my wheel, which has essentially put my forks out of parallel. The brakes dont work very well anyway, hence the reason for the new pads......

    So

I think the best route to go in this situation is to source a pair of original calipers for the XJ550, have them reconditioned and fit them together with new pads, and possibly a pair of new discs.

Where can I get a pair of calipers? A UK source would be good?

Bye the way, here is a pic of the bike in its current form, should anyone be interested at all:

Are you sure the rest is correct? US-market XJ550R's all had straight-spoked wheels. Are you sure those are RD calipers, or if they are, are you sure THEY are what's not right? They LOOK just like the (RH only) caliper(s) on my 550 Secas. Maybe someone swapped the front wheel to match a 16" rear wheel, necessitating the washers and spacer. Are there washers on both sides?

So far as I can gather, the front wheel is correct. It is a "Parallel Import" having been brought into the UK from "wherever" in 1997. The dealer I know used to work for Yamaha so I would guess he knows what he is on about, or at least should know what he is on about, and he pointed out that the original calipers should have been a twin-pot arrangement on both sides. He showed me the catalogue with the 1:1 size drawings of the brake pads, and the correct ones are much longer and shaped differently to these ones which he identofoed as being RD.

Both calipers are washered out to about 6mm each side (3 x 12mm standard washers).

At the end of the day, Im not feeling too safe with this setup and need to do something with it as soon as I can.
