:?: Its just a simple qustion. My xj650 maxim is not idleing right at all. I have to keep the choke on to get it to stay running when i stop at redlights. I bought a repair book and all. But i cant seem to find the simplest seeming thing. Can anyone explain to me where the Idle adjustment is? It would be much apperciated. Thankyou. :?:

    Hello Thor,

I'm pretty new to this myself. I want to throw my in my two cents just to see how close I come to anyone else that answers this. As far as the idle screw it's between the carbs. If you kneel down looking between the air box and carbs you can see the little notched adjusting screw sticking out. I think you perform the adjustment with the bike at operating temp. Turn right to adjust up then of course left to idle down. As far as the idle goes I think we should shoot for 1050. A brief history of the bike will help others pin point the problem. Did this happen all of a sudden, been doing it for a while, any work performed on the carbs as far as cleaning or adjusting? I'm sure the others will probably suggest a sync followed by colortuning. My colortune is on the way!

Great guidance Gegan! Couldn't have said it better myself.
Small note: If you ever have chance to pull your carbs off, lube up the adjuster screw with some Anti-seize, no more wrestling with the little bugger!

Actually I just bought the bike a couple weeks ago. The previous owner had always done the carb work himself. He actually game me this whole system he created for working on the carbs that is a combination of tubes and hoses. This is my first bike (besides an off road bike) and I LOVE IT. I mean it handles well it takes off nice and fast runs good. Any help is great. Im sorry i cant provide more information but like i said its a new bike and I know nothing about its previous up keep and tuning besides the seller telling me he always kept it in great running shape. Thank you very much, im going out right now to have a look for that idle screw.

Just got the idle set to about 1050. Running good. Thanks for the help. The throtle dial was a small plastic dial with ridges right where you said gegan. Thanks. I seen the dial before but was not sure if that was it, it was unlike idle switchs i have delt with on offroad bikes and quads. But once again thank you for your help. Glad i could get it running right (my road test is in one week)

The adjustment on the cable can "Act" as an idle adjustment ... but, it is - IN fact - the "Cable tension / Throttle free-play" adjustment. That adjustment should be backed-off allowing the Carb Idle Adjuster (between 2 & 3) to handle the business of getting the idle right.

I hate the thing. Hard to move even if slathered with lube. Placed where your hand begins to cook if you try and tweak-it while out on a ride.

After you get the idle right at the Carb screw ... set-up your cable for where you are comfortable with free-play. Buy-the-book has a little more of a dead spot in it for my tastes. I run it snug. I like making a well-controlled start-off after stopping for a light.
