Forgot my manual at home far away and I'm trying to fix my headlamp not working. I tested the bulb on a 12V battery and it'ok. So I have to check the wiring from the battery up. I'm not sure which wires to check without a diagram.

It worked ok until I got part of the dielectic grease out of some of the connectors under the seat. Only the headlamp is gone though. :?

I think I saw those diagrams here, but I can't find them now. Can someone point me to them please? Or provide me with new ones?

XS400L 1983 (same as XS400J for the essential parts).

I had that pdf for the Seca - not sure the wiring is the same as for the XS400J and L models. The Seca has a serial starting with 12E and the Maxim L (and J) have 12R instead (my bike is 12R). I didn't check with my J manual to see if the wiring was different or not from that of the pdf manual.

The other, H version, is new to me.

If I have nothing else, I'll try to match one of these with the wires on my bike. Might be hard for me to do though.

ok DW - I'll use that pdf manual if the wire color codes are the same on all those models. Tks.

Neither the low beam nor the high beam light up - the blue monitor light stays off when I toggle the high beam switch. I tested the bulb with a 12V battery and i'ts ok (I wasn't sure just testing the filaments for continuity was good enough).

I tested twice all the fuses that I saw under the seat and all show continuity with the volt meter and a third time by pulling them out before testing each.

I tried to open the switch case on the handle bar, but one of the screws is eaten so I stopped until I find a replacement. I assume if it was the high beam switch on the handle bar, I would have the low beam working anyway.

I don't know if there is a connector between the battery and the headlight located under the seat. That's what I'll be looking for next since I fooled around with all those connectors trying to clean them out of dielectric grease. Maybe I should fill them up with die-grease again

    I hate tracing wires

I assume it's easier to start from the battery up to the headlight and not the other way around...

Well, with the wiring diagram I started to follow wires by the color. Turns out the fuse box is junk. Twist a little, something comes on. Put the seat on, it turns off. Finally after twisting connectors at the fuse box just so, got everything to work - for now.

I'm shopping for a good replacement fuse box. If I can't find any, as a last resort I'll put in some inline fuse connectors, even though I prefer the box concept.

Thanks DW for that diagram - seems the colors are the same as on my XS400L.
