Can someone tell me what to look for if my 82 Xj750 seca runs a little rough at slow speed say just above idle 5-10mph. I can give it gas and it runs great and no other problems at a higher speed. It starts and Idles OK but when I take off it kind of bucks a little until I give it more gas, not much.
Also what are some of the systems of needing a valve adjustment.

Hi Al I assume from your description you are talking about the transition from idle to higher RPMS. The Idle mixture is adjusted to give you a good idle and smooth that transition. Check the color of your plugs and yo can tell if you are running lean or rich. From the sounds of it you are a bit lean.

Checked the plugs bill and they seem to be ok. I have Autolite63 plugs in there. Do you think I should change the plugs to a ngk? These were the plugs in the bike when I bought it.

No should be OK - check the insulator color it should be a nice paper bag tan if tuned just right. It will be whiter if lean and darker if rich. After a 10 or so mile ride you should see a nice tan.

Search on plug chops there area lot of pics showing different coloration.

Bike has been down since I changed the head bearings and found a broken ignition, I hope to be getting a new switch today from Len, Once I get her running I will check the plugs and let you know.
    Thanks Bill

Got the switch from Len today, I gotta tell ya he is the man. There would be a XJ bike heaven for all our bikes without his help. OK back to my problem, got the bike running and the plugs are tan. I am only having the low speed jerk while cold, once the bike warms up it seems to be OK at low speed.

Hey Bill how did those crash/Engine bars fit. How do they look did u put on pegs.

    We need pics.

Almost dead set on a bad sync. Have you sync'd lately, or ever?

You can make your own out of some tubing, glass baby bottles (or any glass bottles with markings on them)

There is a FAQ how to make a 2 bottle sync rig in the faq section.
Just be sure the hoses you have hooked up to the vac ports are BARELY into the bottle. I made the mistake of having them in the ATF fluid, and sucked fluid straight up the tube haha... whoops.

If you don't get it, I will post a more detailed FAQ or something about it later tonight, right now I am @ work and trying to leave :) hehe.

Hi dpaw just making sure I know with carbs are what. sitting on the bike #1 carb is on the right outside is this correct? This is a pic of bench syn but I have to guess they are the syn screws I turn to equal the fluid in the bottles.

I think you should continue with the sync, Al, but if it that doesn't clear it up it could be a vacuum leak. I had a similar problem and after some investigation I found the vacuum line from the number 3 intake to the petcock was split at the intake fitting. I replaced the vacuum line and solved my problem.

Wow Thanks bill I am glad you cleared the #1 up for me.

Looking foward to see some of those pics. I was a little concerned about sticking my legs out and having them hit the side of the engine.

Thanks Hack, will do. How did you find the leak? Did you use the propane bottle method or am I getting that confused with something else.

Al , I added a couple of pics with the new bars and my after fall repairs. I had to replace my windshield the rest is invisible - I added a foam air filter and retuned, replaced the gas cap seal and the throttle and clutch cables.

As far as being close the to the engine I don't have any issues with that using the pegs. You can of course pull your legs in and be close but I tend to relax my legs which pitches them out a bit.

Your bike looks great Bill. I had to look 3 times before I seen the bars. (At 65 that's good for me LOL) I was expecting the bars to be in front of the exhaust but they look great.

    Al,

My bike was chugging when I left a stop after a long highway ride. I was troubleshooting and decided that before I got too far I would sync the carbs and colortune. When I pulled off the vacuum hose I found the split, and the rest is history. I had a delusion at one point that it was a clutch cable adjustment, but that was just wishful thinking.

    Keep us posted.
