I spent over an hour yesterday searching the forum for gas tank options for my '82 seca 650--my tank rusted through yesterday and it's so bad it's not worth repairing. almost all of the posts i found were for Maxims or, for using Seca tanks on a Maxim. There was a little discussion about replacing tanks FOR Secas, but not much.

I want to stay Seca because i want to keep the sharp Seca look, but i will go Maxim on the gas tank if I can't find anything good Seca.

I've read that the seca 650 and 750 tanks are interchangeable. are those the only ones? how about the 550? I found a really good-looking one from a 900 seca that I want to put on, but i don't know easily it'll mount.

What are my options? does anybody know??

The 550 tank will bolt on but depending on what year 650 you have it may be smaller as the 550 was only 15 litres, I know some of the 650 had a 19 litre

If you give me few days I can check on the interchangeability of the Seca 650 vs 900 tanks. Might cost you a little info though...

550 tanks....NYET. The mounting distance from the rear to the front mounts are different. You'd have to do a lot if customizing, or have a very big hammer available.

900 tanks...huge. Might fit, though, but would look really out of place on a 650 (imo)!

yeah, i thought it might, but is the body of a 900 really that much bigger thana 750? I figured the gas tank would be about the same size as a 750. anyone know for sure? I found a good one i might buy, but only if it's about the same size as a 750 i think.

Let me know what you find out, MaximumX!

The mounting distance is the same as I have a 19 litre 650 tank on my Seca 550 and it is a straight "bolt on" but the seat would have to be modified on the 550

Putting the 550 tank on the 650 wouldn't require any seat mods but you would loose 4 litres of capacity

I think the 650 came out with two different size tanks depending on the year though?

I would probably be fine with less capacity. i'm thinking even if it was a little short, i could rig up a bracket that would keep it in place well enough. before my tank ruptured, gas was literally diffusing through the steel into the air and evaporating--that's how thin it rusted through. A smaller tank would still be much better than that.

Do you have any idea which years had different sized gas tanks, kickaha? mine's an '82

The Seca 650 turbo had 2 different tanks for the 2 different years.

Strip it, let a radiator shop boil it out, and braze up what's left, then POR 15 it and re-paint.

Man, that's alot of work. Maybe find another tank is better?
There's a guy on here who bought a 650 Seca just for parts. . .

No I don't it may be the 650 turbo I was thinking about, but the 550 and 650 Seca tanks are a straight bolt on swap all the brackets and mounts on the 650 tank lined up fine on my 82 550 Seca and as I was using a solo seat I got it made to suit

Best bet is still to find a tank the same as what you've got though

    Okay JDogg,

Here's a pic of the two tanks:

It seems that the 900 tank would physically fit on your Seca as I was able to fit the 650 tank onto the 900 frame. I don't think your side covers would work with the 900 tank though. The back end of the 900 tank flares out more and seems to hang down more over the sides.

So yeah, it would fit, physically, but I'm not sure it would be as good a fit from an aesthetic point of view. My advice would be for you to try to find a nice 650 tank and stick with what you know fits.

duly noted. thanks for the reply. I just found a 750 tank in really good shape and just bought it. Hopefully it will fit nicely on my 650 like everyone says. One question, though, the two holes at the bottom sides, are those for mounting? or are they holes for the side cover to fit into? the 750 tank i just bought has them too, so i was wondering if i'd have to grind the off or if they're not going to get in the way. My tank should be here by the end of next week, so i won't actually be able to fit it until then.

The 750 side covers plug into rubber grommets on the tank.
I'd bend them in a little before grinding, make things fit that way.

well here it is. my 650 with the 750 tank. It DOES bolt on perfectly, but the tank is a little shorter! there's now a gap b/t the tank and the seat that I'll have to fill somehow. might just make a new (longer) seat to match it. mine right now is already not the original, so i'm not too worried about that.
