I have a shot at an 82 XS400 for CHEAP but no title. I have asked for the story on why no title but I was wondering if anyone has experience tilting a bike with that history in NC.

NC is very fussy about titles and I would like to restore it. For the price I can easily part it out but prefer restoration.

You can get one Bill , it will cost you 350$. Go through one of thost title services you can find online. If you do the leg work yourself you can save 100$ , but it is much more of a pain. Be sure to get a bill of sale and document how the PO came to own it.

Wow problem is $250 to $350 is a lot to add to the base cost - dang...

It would be easier if the current owner knows the name and address of the person for which the bike is titled. If they can tell you that then you can get a lost title form from the DMV. But you have to know the name and address on the title to do it.

That is what I had to do with my bike. It hadn't been titled in seven years. The guy I bought it from found out who his dad bought it from. I called them and got the title transfered into my name. Just had to hope the guy who's name was on the title was a nice dude. Luckily in my case he was. He could have easily said "That's my bike and I want it back." You may be able to find out who's name is on the title from the DMV, looking up the vin, and call them before you buy it. My neighbor runs an auto auction and deals with titles every day. She told me to never buy something without at title, unless there was a very good explanation. She said most of the time it is stolen. There is a reason the title wasn't transfered with the bike. unless it was bought for parts, then something could be fishy.

Yea I asked for the story but no answer yet. I'm real tempted- if it was an XJ I'd prob take it for parts but I wouldn't mind restoring it for sure.
