So this just started happening last night and I hoped it was a fluke, but i turns out it isn't. I came to a stop and shifted down through the gears like usual. I didn't pay attention to which top gear i was in, so i didn't keep track of how many downshifts it made. When i started, it almost died, (it was in 2nd) so i started off in 2nd gear, pulling the clutch intermittently and stomping on the shift lever with everything i had. It simply WOULD NOT go into first. I burned the clutch through 2nd and continued through the rest w/o any probs--it was just first gear. a couple other times last night i had to keep hitting the shift lever till it would go, but at least it would go. And when it did, i wasn't like a forced sound--it would seat in gear with the same semi-gentle clunk that all other gears do.

This morning, i almost got rear-ended by a city bus while trying to accelerate from a stop in 2nd! Luckily i was able to make rolling stops for the next three stops, but still, it's nice to put it in 1st at a slow rolling stop!

So i'm at work now and really want to know what's going on. Does this just sound like i need to adjust the clutch cable? or is there a bad gear i need to replace? or a clutch plate? or what??

and ideas/feedback will be greatly appreciated

I think I'd check the clutch cable first. How hard is it to find neutral? Usually a pretty good indicator.

it's pretty hard sometimes. Generally takes me at least 5 seconds.

Ok, i'll try checking that. does it sound like it's too loose? or too tight? Too tight, no?

    any other ideas?

I'd think too loose; it's not disengaging enough at slow speeds. At least, that's what it sounds like to me - I had to make a lot of clutch cable adjustments when I first got my bike.

yup too loose. Sure sounds like cable. For tonight use the Adjuster at the lever, loosen the retaining nut and crank the barrel out a bit. Try it out - into first and into neutral, adjust until you got it.

When you get home follow this procedure by our friend Rick
