Was on some turns, leaned too far, highway peg dragged, that was the end of me. I bailed off the bike. It went about 10 more feet down the side of the road almost over the hill side. I rolled a few more feet and laid there for a few minutes assessing my injuries. I could move everything and I was breathing, so I took these as good signs.
I got up about the time my uncle had turned around and got back to me. Someone stopped and helped him get the bike back up. Took off my helmet and there are a few minor scratches. The gloves didn't hold up at all. The pavement went right through them. I was in jeans and boots the lower half of me is fine. I wasn't wearing a jacket >.<

Road rash F*cking hurts, ALWAYS wear a jacket!

Not sure of all the damage to the bike. At this point in time I don't care.

Sorry to see that. Ouch, hope you didn't get hurt too bad, (like something broken)

Hopefully you'll come around to getting back in the saddle again. Take your time, heal, and think about it.

    Oh you poor thing.

I wouldn't sell the bike though. Yeah, you've been through quite an experience, but I wouldn't give up on the bike. Like Polock said, you've been through the wreck, and everyone falls at least once.

Let's hope it never happens to you or anyone else ever again.

    Good luck, whatever your decision.

Man, tenn, glad you're ok. Hopin' you'll come around on the bike - a buddy of mine laid his Virago down about 6 weeks or so ago, sustained a fair amount of damage (both him and the bike), and he had the bike ready to ride before he was off the crutches.

    You can do it!

Ouch!! Sorry to hear that Tenn. Hope you heal up quick and complete. I hope you don't give up on the bike but you have to do what you are comfortable with.

Ouch!!! don't give up so quick. I've been down twice! It took almost 10 years to jump back in the saddle again but I'm glad I did.

Geeze Belle, I know you like attention but there are easier ways to get it...
I'm relieved to hear you walked away relatively intact.
ATGATT (All The Gear All The Time) is a mantra, sounds like you will be singing it as well.
Don't kick the bike to the curb yet, I'm going to back up the gang. You will be looking at it again in a week or so.
Vitamin E and Neosporin are your friends with road rash. Just be sure to keep using it every day and you will heal up fairly quick and minimize scaring.

Let me add my condolensces as well. I'm very sorry to hear about this. Wouldn't want to push you towards something you're no-longer comfortable with, but hopefully in a few days things will all be better.

    Cheers,

Glad you walked away, sliding down the road is scary sh#t.
The road rash that gets scrubed out with a stiff brush is the worst.
Yours looks to be not so full of gravel and pavement.
Damn that's 3 XJ members down this year already.
Hope you all are healing up nicely.
Remember the guy last year that hit the driveshaft laying in the road?
    Wonder how he's doing.
Belle is that the stock headlight?
I ask because it's chrome, I've never seen a chrome one.

Sorry to hear about your fall and glad to hear you're all right. I took my first fall six months into riding; scared the hell out of me, left some interesting patterns on knee and shoulder...but made me more determined than ever to make sure it didn't happen again.

Always remember - it was never a matter of if you were going to drop the bike, but when. Now you've got that part over and done with.

Beat the bike, don't let the bike beat you.

Sorry to hear about your mishap Belle. Glad to hear it wasn't any worse although I can't check facebook from this computer.

I think the others are right though, don't get rid of the bike until you've had time to heal and reflect upon riding. It costs nothing to let it sit in your garage for a couple of months. If you get rid of it now, you may regret it in a while.

Don't give up yet, you may well change your mind. :) A few years back I had a redneck cager in a jacked up truck, pull right out in front of me from a side road. My Harley chopper, while built from an XLS, had the giant front double disk brake set up. I grabbed the brakes so hard it snapped the forks on the cheap Kennedy Mid-Glide Conversion extended front the previous owner had installed. I hit the ground and watched my bike, the "Black B***h", flip flopping down the highway as I lay there bleeding. I gathered myself together, called a wrecker for my bike, caught a ride home (8 miles away), hopped on my Wife's '97 Suzuki Savage and rode back to the scene to check things out better. My point is, like the old cowboy, just get back on the horse after being thrown. :)

BTW it took nearly a year but I rebuilt BB with a proper Wide Glide front end and kept on truckin'. :) The link shows BB and I AFTER the rebuild. :)

Sorry to hear of you misfortune. I like the advice folks are offering, give it some time then do what you feel is right for you. If you head in another direction you'll be missed here but that's no reason to do something you're no longer comfortable with. Sounds like you've got some riding relatives who might be a good source of council.

Wow, if you were dragging highway peg you had that thing leaned way the hell over! Must of been fun until you heard the scraping. I've done that a few time, too. Kind of unnerving the first time.

I went and looked at the pictures. The bike looks like it took the worst of the beating. A hole in the pickup cover; the headlight torn out; a huge bruise in the tank. Damn! When you crash you don't mess around!

Glad you're okay. You'll heal up; the bike won't. He's going to need your help to get back in shape. You owe him that much.

All the best to you, heal up quick. Maybe time and a more cautious approach will put you back in the saddle. I did the exact same thing last year on a roundabout-traffic circle but was really lucky and didn't go over.

I showed my wife the photos of the wreck and she told me not to show her anymore because it makes her not confortable when I go out and ride. I told her that my turn will eventually come. She said WHAT? I said, yeah, it's a matter of when not if. She grunted and told me that did not make her feel better. I'm not exactly looking forward to it. I have already had about a dozen close calls. I almost ran over two deer two days ago on my way to work while riding my bike (more like they almost ran me over) One of my buddies qrecked his 600RR a month ago and two weeks ago my other buddy wrecked his honda and is now out of commision for a while.

    Belle:
I'm sorry about your spill. I hope you get on your bike soon. I know everyone wants to encourage you to get back into riding and I am too, but it's your decision to make in the end. As your body heals I hope you will overcome the fear as well. I'm sure you have to think about family and other responsibilities etc.. I've only been riding since January so I'm a noob, and I'm sure my time is just around the corner. I just hope I'm not going too fast and that it's not a severe wreck.

    Get Well!

That sucks! I feel for you.. I just installed some foot pegs on my engine guard. I put them as high as I could so the bike would have to be way over to hit the road. I did have a peg hit on me once when I was young and dumb enough to out run the cops. I saved it but it was scary as hell! It actually picked the rear tire up off the ground and dropped it over about a foot. Some how I got it back on track and kept on going. Yes I did get away lol I was crazy back then. Hope you heal well and if you get back on the bike move thous pegs up as far as you can.

Glad to hear you're up to posting at least - those hands must be doing okay! Congrats on your first laydown/getoff. As is said, "there are two kinds of motorcyclists -- those have have been down, and those who haven't been down YET". Welcome to the former. *hugs*

I've been down in a similar situation, and while I was wearing my jacket I was not wearing any gloves at all and my jeans.

Roadrash sucks bad. Especially on your hands. I even rode myself to the hospital to get checked out. *more hugs* If you can find cans of stuff called "spray first aid" down there, it worked wonders for me on my 'rash.

Heal up, welcome to the world of ATGATT, and go riding again. Although I do sometimes still just wear jeans instead of leathers, I am never without jacket & gloves. Hot? Hell yes, but I guess I'd just rather sweat than bleed. Besides, once you're moving (and it's that the point?) it's all good.

So far all I can see that it will need is:
    Headlight (No it wasn't stock)
    Turn signals all around
Maybe a new tank, think the old one can be fixed
    Engine cover
    crash bar on the left
    Speedo/tach/light panel
    ignition
    clutch and brake levers
    New bars

I think what had happened is I scraped the peg, it scared the shit out of me and I panicked. For some reason the highway peg did not fold up like it should have, instead shoved into the engine cover.

Right now I don't have the money to fix the bike. The insurance company wants to write it off. That isn't happening.

I'll let it sit in the garage for a while before I make any decisions. (My brother already has offered to buy it.)

Today I feel like I slid down pavement and grass about 40 mph. The road rash isn't so bad now that it's all cleaned out. The rest of me hurts, I have sore muscles where I didn't even know I had muscles.

I'm just mad at myself for leaving my jacket hanging on the coat rack by the front door. I'll also buy full leather gloves.

Your crash bar should be fixable. The 2 points do fold over which is what probably caused the peg to poke the case hole. Looking at the pics and where you have the pegs I would think your bar would scrape before the peg. I have a similar setup.

That can be scary when it happens. You have me wondering about what kind of gloves you had on. I wear a vented pair in summer with reinforced leather palms but I wonder about how they would fare in a wreck like yours.

Take it too a body shop and tell them to give you a bill that is less then the blue book value. They will most likely help you out thinking they will get the business. Get what you can from the insurance co. and fix it with parts from ebay, who knows you might make a buck or two.

It's not the stock headlight. I put it on before I sold her the bike. I am glad she's ok, but sore. Don't worry all, I already told her all she wants to hear about all gear all the time.

This bike has quite a history. I drove to New Hampshire to pick it up, did most of the mods to it, rode it for about 3 years and then sold it to her to learn on. It's taught at least two people how to ride and has been an amazing machine.

I'm trying to talk her into selling it back to me. :)
