    G'day all,
got on my bike to ride home today & noticed the end of the left hand grip was loose, got a rubber mallet to knock it back in & saw a socket head cap screw hanging out of the end 8O . got home gave the dog a pat said hello to the family & said i will be a little while i look at this problem, got a allen key to undo the shc m6x80,all the while wondering what was it screwing into??,knowing the handlebars are hollow?
Got shc out &looked into the end of the handle bar & noticed there has been a piece of rubber shoved into the end of the handlebar (what the f***) 8O :( ,it appears that the shc was put in & screwed into the rubber with nothread for it to screw into??then i do not now if the rubber has broken& allowing it to come loose or what????
Question is .how does 1 go about fixing it??
what comes to my mind is,
take old grips off ,get a drill & drill out the remaning rubber & ??
1)get a piece of delrin or something like & machine it to fit into the end of bar & then tap thread into the end of it to take the shc!! :? :? :?

    cheers al bear

Re: HOW WOULD YOU FIX THIS

The part is a handle bar weight. There should be nut or plate it screws into which expands the rubber - jamming it in place. I would assume your has fallen loose and is behind the rubber piece still in your bars.

What Bill said - there's more in there that you need to get out first, or it'll be rattling in there forever.

How would I fix it? fish out the washer & nut that came off, re-attach it to the bolt. tighten it up just a bit, then put it back in the handlebar and tighten it up. As you tighten it, the nut and washer will compress the rubber bit make it secure.

You call on new - if the current ones look ok, there shouldn't be any need for new... (chacal might disagree!)

I'd reuse it unless you just want to replace it. Also the weight is optional but does help cut down on vibration.

Re: HOW WOULD YOU FIX THIS

    G'day all.
i just simply do not understand the concept of how it works.
bolt screw whater you want to call it going thru the end of the weightinto a piece of rubber,by screwing the screw into the nut is pulling the nut up the thread of the bolt, this is the part i donot understand how does that expand the rubber inside the h/bar????   :? :? :? :?
    cheers albear 8) 8)

Re: HOW WOULD YOU FIX THIS

since the rubber is soft it will be squashed by the force of the nut moving up the thread - this will force it against the handlebar inside walls and jam it in place.

Think in terms of a tennis ball if you press down on it it becomes oblong - expanding at right angles to the force you are applying.

Re: HOW WOULD YOU FIX THIS

thanks bill!! it makes sense now!
but these rubber thingy looks home made not a bought item the piece of rubber that camr out of the handle bar has been scolloped with a knife, not amachined item 1 would expect.
so i should get the other piece of rubber out of the bar & put it all back together!!

    cheers albear

Re: HOW WOULD YOU FIX THIS

Yup that should resolve it. You have to dig the other piece out to get the nut which may have fallen into your bar somewhere. I would suspect there is nothing wrong with the rubber parts it just came loose then came apart.

Re: HOW WOULD YOU FIX THIS

Take a long bolt with same size and thread as the one on the handlebar weight and screw it into the rubber piece in the bar. You might need to spray a little soap/water solution in the handlebar in to help the rubber piece come out. You should be able to work the rubber piece out using this method. Find the washer and nut. Assemble loosely to the handlebar end, push everything into the bar and tighten her up.

    Should fix it.

Re: HOW WOULD YOU FIX THIS

question ,would u use a nyloc nut or a std hex nut.better off staying with a zinc plated v's stainless steel ? i think z/p soley for magnectic reasons.(if it comes o0ff again put a magnet in to pick it up.

    thaks again .

with I nyloc I think you will just spin you need the nut to move freely enough to tighiten and swish out the rubber.

+1 on not using the nyloc. use a "regular" nut.
