I have some stains on my exhaust that look like burnt on tar. The stuff is on there good. I would like to know how to remove it without scratching it. I tried some scotch bright on a wheel and it started to scratch it. Any one know how to get this off?

I've always used 0000 steel wool followed by chrome polish. Works good for me.

I've tried lots of things but works best for me is non-scratch Scotch Brite and WD40 to get rid of the gum - then apply some Mother's polish with a crumpled ball of aluminum foil. The aluminum is soft and won't scratch but gets the tough stuff off. Then buff with a soft cloth and you're done.

try tying a rag around the pipe over the stuff and then put kerosene on the rag let it set over night, scrape it with a nickel in the morning
the kerosene should stay wet all night and a nickel won't scratch the chrome

If it is something like melted rubber from a boot try Easy Off oven cleaner. Just be very carefull not to get it on any painted surface. I've been using it for years to get stuff off my harley pipes.

Doesn't Easy-Off say not to use it on chrome? I just checked the website, they say that they don't recommend it's use on chrome because some highly polished aluminum can easily be mistaken for chrome and it will ruin and pit aluminum.
Guess that means Rick doesn't keep this stuff in his garage... or does it?

Yes, the can says to not use it on exterior oven chrome or aluminum. Aren't some interior oven racks chrome?

Maybe Harley chrome is better than oven chrome. Myself and many others use it on chrome exhaust pipes with no obvious effects other than removing the burnt stuff. I spray it on a rag and rub the offending spot. YMMV

I keep a can in my garage.
