well I was thinking (danger will robinson danger!!!) Since I am going to the trouble to rebuild my xj...maybe I should replace the mufflers with something more modern. I have been doing my homework and I found some generic sportster style muffs from JCwhitney that I have grown kinda fond of. http://www.jcwhitney.com/autoparts/Item ... 0000144196 My question is would I have to rejet if I went with these? I am looking for a new look with a minimum of fussing with the carbs. What do the XJ gods say?

IMHO those look nice but are kind of pricey and probably not that good of quality. Stock Harley mufflers are are very good quality and available quite readily and cheaply because Harley owners don't like stock. They look pretty similar actually better in my eye. I got my Sportster mufflers for $25 including shipping from eBay. Plenty on there to suit your taste and save you money. I personally have not had to re-jet. From what I can gather if you only replace the mufflers and leave the rest of the exhaust alone you should be OK. The Harley mufflers give a deeper more aggressive sound. They are quiet when idling but can give you plenty of sound when you want it. I looked at the restrictions in my original mufflers and my Harley mufflers and they seem pretty similar. Good luck and post pics if you do it.
