I just finished putting my engine back together and, I noticed the 2 dowel holes that align the valve cover in place. I can't seem to find the dowels anywhere in my garage. My question is, were they there to begin with? And if so, if I can't find them, where can I get replacements? None of the parts places list these two dowels, the Yamaha parts manual does not list them either! 8O

    Thanks
    Ken

Yup! I'm thinking that they went AWOL. I'm hoping that someone out there can either verify that they were never there or, lead me to source for replacements.

If they are the same units that were used in a 1982 Maxim 650,I have a pair you can have for free. However, they seem to be very firmly seated in the cylinder casting. Any suggestions on removing them without damaging them will be greatly appreciated...

Hey danno, Thanks for the offer! I'm not sure of the fit either. I can't even find the part listed. But if you hit it with some Kriol and "judiciously" tweek it with a pair of plyers, I'm sure that I can file off any burrs that might happen. However if they get mis-shapen or crushed, I will never be able to get them back to "round". I sent a PM to chacal to see what he knows about the part. Let me hear what he has to say about the matter, who knows the parts that you are offering me might not fit.
    Thanks
    Ken

Wow, you know the two different valve covers that I just checked here have the offset bosses in the valve cover for where those dowel pin would go into, but the bosses are NOT drilled out to accept the dowel pins............hmmmmm.
