My Dad has a 1988 1300 Venture that won't run without the "Choke" ON.
The bike sat for a week after installing new fork seals. Carbs have been pulled apart and cleaned. A new/used fuel pump and coils have been installed. NO change in the way it runs. He also did a "Seafoam" treatment. It just wont idle without the choke on. I'm not sure if anyone can help me here on this forum but maybe there is someone that can direct me to a forum that can. I'd really like to get this bike up and running for him so we can do some riding together. Out of 5 children, I'm the only one that rides.
    Thanks

First, here's the two biggest sites for Yamaha Venture owners:

    The Venturers

    VentureRider

By your description of the problem, I'm guessing those carbs are NOT as clean as you think they are. Either that or the Seafoam treatment loosened up some gunk that's now caught in one of the passages.

What it sounds like is one or more of the idle jets is clogged, so the 'enrichment circuit' (aka choke) needs to be working for it to get enough fuel to idle.

    Hi...

If your carbs have been off (which I assumed you did to clean them), you'll definitely need to resynch them. The carbs on the Ventures are very susceptable to losing their synch when handled due to the square rack configuration.

If one or more of your throttle plates aren't set correctly, the bike will starve for fuel (slightly contrary to Maxim/Seca's idle mixture set-up).

So: Synch, then reset the idle point with the idle adjustment screw.. I'll bet you are good to go. If you have any further questions, feel free to PM me. Good luck !

Generally speaking ... when the Symptom is: "Won't Run Without Choke" ... that points directly to a FUEL Supply problem.
On the Inline-Four's ... that indicates that the Pilot FUEL Jet and possibly the passage have been obstructed.
Although i think it would take more than a week sitting-around to have the Fuel in the Bowls evaporate down and leave a Jet Clogging residue. it might be a pre-existing condition aggravated by the time spent parked.
