My father hasn't been on his own bike for 30+years, so for fathers day this year, I found him a very nice 1982 yamaha xj1100 maxim with a factory 3 piece fairing on the front and a kg sissy bar out back.

This bike is 99% on bodywork, chrome, and looks wise, but was baught as a non-runner for $1200.00usd.

I started it on starting fluid before I bought it, and I also took a compression test, shifted it through the gears, rolled it down a hill, etc...

That may sound a little high, but you really have to see the condition of this bike to understand.

This is a 13k miles, indoor heated storage, one owner, beautiful bike.

The original owner had just gotten a full service on it at the yammi dealer before he parked it (he got prostate cancer in the spring of '05). The reciepts total over $1100.00usd, so I didn't do too bad from a parts standpoint.

Some of the things that were done right before the storage include:

    "full service and inspection"
    rebuilt carbs
    new tires
new wheel bearings in the front
new pads and rotors front and back
    fork seals and oil
    oil and filter
    "shaft assy service"
"tank sealant"(worst thing they cpuld have done...improper prep)
    and some light bulbs

As far as the not running goes, the problem stemmed from a bad rust repair in the tank...

The PO had the tank KREEMed while it was at the dealer, and they must not have used the prep before they did it.

I removed the carbs, dissasembled, cleaned, and regasketed them. While they were off, I ordered some manifolds.

I took off the petcocks(there are two) and I'm waiting on the rebuild kit, but I had the tank to deal with, so I don't mind(it'll be here on thursday).

I found oem petcock filters at the dealer, it's a good thing, because mine were shot!

So... on to the tank mess.

The tank had the kreem, rust, and some varnish buildup in it..

First, I drained out the half tank of four year old, foul, brown gas from the tank and lines.

Second, I put six bottles of the cheapest toilet bowl cleaner(dollar store "Johhny Flash" brand) and a chain, and shook the crap out of it for hours. Then I rinsed it out with water. That took out most of the rust.

Third, after contacting the KREEM company, I used Kleen Strip stripper to soften the remaining kreem. I left the chain in to agitate the mix.(be careful if you do this, the stripper builds up pressure )That worked great, but I was really careful not to get it on the paint... I rensed that out with mineral spirits per the can, and then water.

Fourth, I did another six bottles of the Johnny Flash with a water rinse.

Lastly, I dried it out with a shop vac on blow, and put a gallon of WD-40 in it until I'm ready for a flush and fill with gas.

I know that it sounds involved, but it wirked out great... just a little flash rust in her now!

I'll keep you guys updated on how it runs after I get the petcocks rebuilt and on.

BTW, I usually build Kawasaki KZ cafe racers and street/strip bikes... I'm not bragging, just some background.

Dude that is awesome! That you would buy a bike for your dad - and a sweet bike at that! I hadn't been on a bike in about 30 years and last year my two older boys and I all bought bikes and we have a blast. I hope you and your dad have many fine years of riding together! My hats off to you for what you did.

    Indy,
How would you rate the "Flickability" of the XJ 1100. I'd like something with more power then my xj650 but I do love the twistys. I've road an xs 1100 but while it wanted to pull my arms out it was a little top heavy.

Lord knows I wish you cold buy a yamaha xjr 1200 on this side of the pond!!!!!!

Sorry, I haven't been on in a few days. To answer your question, I've not got the bike on the road yet. The petcock rebuild kit just came in on thursday, and I just got them rebuilt yesterday evening. After I get the tank on(hopefully today), I'll take it down a few back roads(if it runs A-1) and get back with you.

I'm sure those tires have been ridden off by now, the original post was 2009.
