I'm trying to take my pilot jets out of my '83 maxim xj500k for cleaning. They are recessed really deep which, in my opinion, is just a bad design. They are stuck in place. I don't want to strip them, but that's what going to happen if I keep trying. Has anyone else run into this? Is there a trick to getting them out or should I just run a wire through them in place?

You should be able to effectively clean them without removing them.

I read somewhere (I think from RickO) that it's important to stop what your doing and go get a screwdriver thick enough for the slot and then grind it down if needed or whatever so equal pressue is being applied throught the entier slot with no air gaps. guess it's not possible if your slot is hacked up pretty bad. Good luck

I' m going to try to clean them in place. I would like to be able to get them out, though. I'll keep my eye out for a screw driver that will work.

Fabricate a Screwdriver Tip for the SOLE PURPOSE of removing the Mikuni Pilot Jets.

I totally agree that it's a "Bad Design"
Having the Pilot FUEL Jet recessed makes its removal all the more difficult.

Use a Pilot Jet that you have successfully removed.
Carefully and meticulously (Grind and Sand) Fabricate a Tip which FITS the Pilot Jet Slot with Total Precision.

Once you have a Tool that Fits the Jets Slot without any "Give" or "Free Play" its easier to REMOVE the Jet without damage occuring.

A perfect fit will transfer the turning torque to the whole Jet.
An imperfect or loose fit will allow the "Wings" of the Slot to have someplace to move too without the entire Jet making the trip.

An ill fitting Screwdriver Tip will let the Soft Brass Wings deform to fill any gap they can find.
A PRECISION Fit makes the Force applied to the Jet turn the whole Jet and get it to break free.

    Heat:

Use a few drops of Olive Oil which will resist burning-off and apply some Heat to the area.
Be careful ... the Olive Oil retains Heat and does not burn off like a Petroleum Product.
Have a few Q-Tips handy to absorb the Olive Oil before attempting to loosen the Jet.

    Technique:
Seat the Precision Tipped screwdriver in the Slot and apply a sudden strong undo motion after you are certain that the tip is firmly seated.
