I hooked up my battery backwards last night and turned the key only to realize my mistake. I hooked it up correctly and things didnt light up so i found the blown fuse and changed it. Everything now lights up when i turn the bike on, but but when i hit the starter switch nothing happens. Dumb mistake, hoping for a bit of enlightenment on how to fix it.

    Thanks fellows,

    James

you may have burnt out the starter silonoid. try to jump the silonoid and see if the starter spins if it does you need a to replace the silonoid.

It's much easier to provide accurate suggestions if you tell us what model and year bike you're talking about.

    Also, which fuse was blown?

Off hand I'd say there's a good chance you shorted a diode or two in the diode block, which would knock out your safety circuits.

After that, I'd be crossing my fingers about the TCI module.

Ouch!!! I did that too, seams they flipped the terminal ends on me when I got a new battery, I only had to replace the fuse thank God!

    Its an 82 750 seca
The fuse that was blown had the sticker that said main underneath it

I just went through and replaced the ignition fuse and that did the trick. I believe i will just go out and buy all new fuses.

Thanks for the input guys, still pretty new to bikes, I really appreciate it.

If it's the stock fuse box, good luck. "AGX" fuses (the shorter glass tube type) are nearly impossible to find these days.

The stock fuse box is prone to having the contact ears break off for no apparent reason. You can replace the fuse clips with ones from Radio Shack, or better; replace the fusebox altogether with a modern one.

Please add your location to your profile and your bike info to your sig. It makes this easier. For instance, the Radio Shack reference isn't worth much if you are in Australia or the UK.

Newest development: I replaced the fuses and the bike fired up and I rode her around a wee and she was perfect. Just recently went to fire it up again after having it sit for a few hours and when i turn the key everything lights up normally but the starter motor will not turn. Fuses are all fine. When i flip the kill switch to run I don't hear the little click that I always have in the past.

    Any guesses?

Relay could be getting sticky and/or the solenoid isn't in much better shape. Pull them open and clean them up. Don't let the crimped relay body slow you down, you can fudge them open by prying them open with a small bladed screw driver. If only the solenoids were as easy to pop open.

    HOW TO: Test a relay

The metal cap is crimped onto the plastic base of the relay. A small flathead screw driver is all you need to bend the dimpled portions away. The cap should then slide right off. Once you're done making your repairs, slide the cap back on and push the dimples back into place with the screwdriver.

replaced the relay, or whichever the one connected to the battery is, and nothing happened. Crossed the relay and the starter motor spun but the bike didn't fire. could be old gas though.

    ?

The "relay" that connects to the battery is called a solenoid. It functions like a relay but is designed to switch high current applications.
You could have a range of issues with a no-start condition. Have you run through the starting circuit, checking for voltage at the ignition switch? Starter button? Solenoid connector?
Need to chase and eliminate all of these.

Yep. Hooking up the battery backward could have tatered the fuse block before the Main fuse finally blew. You need to check to make sure you've got power where you're suppose to.
