So I took my 1982 XJ650 out to the track today to race in a vintage race. I've got rearset pegs on it b/c the stock are so low and were dragging. The rules of my local club insist on a bellypan run below the motor. This is run below the (stock) pipes b/c the pipes are below the frame. In my race today I drag the bellypan and chewed it up. I want to get it higher so that I don't drag it in the corners. The only way to do this (it seems to me) is to get the pipes out from under the bike. Does anyone know of aftermarket pipes (I was thinking a four-into-one set that runs the pipes higher somehow? (Honestly, I'm exhausted right now and haven't even thought about whether this is physically possible) I figured if there were a way to do it, someone here would know about it.

    Thanks.
    Peter

I have obviously not seen every 4into1 option out there but the Kerker that I run and all the other headers that I have seen are actually lower under the frame than the stock pipes. If I ever change my exhaust I will custom fab individual drag pipes and mounts. This will allow me reinstall the center stand and make oil changes 100% easier and quicker. You may be required to have some kind of muffler baffle, but a custom bent set would do the trick for you.

A follow up question: Where do the four merge into the one? Because what I really care about is the clearance on the lower left and right (where I touch down on corners. If the four became one quickly (thus increasing clearance on the sides) that might work. Have you got a picture? petermbooth326@gmail.com

    thanks,

    I get your drift.
I don't have a picture at hand but I think a header like mine would work for you. The pipes come together and bend under the frame into the collector just slightly right of center and run back to the right to sweep up under the right side passenger peg mount.
The left side is free of any obstruction.
The extra drop is at the center line and sightly right. This proves a challenge for me in lowering my frame but would be advantageous for dragging a knee. My forward controls are the limiting factor for me in that respect. As if I will ever need to worry about it!

    EDIT:
I did find some pics that might help...

luvmy40, i love that kerker exhaust .... idk what it is about it, those pipes are just sexy.... clean lines .... how does it sound? Is it loud? That's my only complaint about my twin-megaphone setup actually, is that it's not loud ENOUGH for my tastes, lol.

    Switch263,
Its about as loud as I would care to have it. It's not a low growl but more like a swarm of killer bees on steroids!
I am actually considering cutting the collector out and running them as turned out drags. The configuration as it stands is prone to dragging on speed bumps and I am going to lower the front and rear suspension by 2-3" this winter. The bends are already dinged up and the collector is not a s solid as it looks in the pics. My only reservation is whether or not I will have to re jet the carbs. Some say yes, some say no...(they are jetted for the Kerker, not stock).
