Hi To All ! I would like to first introduce my self to everyone. I am Don from Illinois and have just joined this site to meet xj owners and get valuable insight into problem solving my motorcycle. The motorcycle I currently own is a 1982 xj650j yamaha maxim. To make a long story short I am currently completely renovating this bike. I bought the motorcycle new in 1982 and sold it to my brother in law in 1986 and he quit riding it in 1988 then parked in a garage that had most of the roof missing. The bike was in sad shape when I got it last fall. The good thing about it is it has only 5,333 mile on it. I completely dismantled it and am now putting it back together. The two sources of information I have are the owners manual and a Haynes XJ750/650 manual. The problem I have is after mounting the driveshaft/ /Housing Mounting and then installing the rear wheel it appears to be too close to the housing (no clearance). Is there better sources of information to assist me in the complete reassembly of this bike ? I would enjoy corresponding with those on this forum but I believe I would become a pest. NICE MEETING ALL OF YOU--- DON !
P.S. Any help would be much appreciated.

There's only going to be a1/4" or less clearance of the rubber to the swingarm when it's back on. As far as the rear whee to final drive housing, it can only go on so far, and you want it seated well, otherwise the rest of the axle assembly won't fit right. Yup, things are close, but they fit. If you are having bad fitment, take a pic and post it here. We'll take a look and help you out.

Yeah, like Dave said... a stock 130/90/16 tire will be a really tight fit on the driveshaft side. If you can score a 650/750 Seca rear wheel, you could go with a 120/90/18 tire, which would give you a tad more clearance and as an added bonus, improve your top end...

Interestingly enough I was just about to ask the same question. I'm actually slightly rubbing my rear wheel against the driveshaft, any notions of the fix rather than tire replacement?

The last rear tire on my bike, an IRC 130/90/16, rubbed. I believe it is just loose mfg specs. My new Avon is the same size and has good clearance.

Hi ! I think I know what the problem is once a responder to my question pointed me down the right path ! The old tire that was on the bike and the new one aren't exactly the same width. They are the same size but as the previous poster indicated different width wise. I first thought there wasn't any clearance but there is some. I would guess 3/16 of an inch. THANKS FOR YOUR HELP DON

    Don,

I also have very very little clearance between the tire and the swing arm. maybe 3/16" Just make sure you keep the itre pressure in the correct range and you will be ok.
