I'm no expert in restoration or painting. In an attempt to return my 82 XJ650J to it's original colors I've uncovered some handy information that may be used for others wishing to do the same.

I started with http://www.starmotorcycles.com/star/parts/home.aspx to see if the parts list for my model would provide any information. The above site and steps towards obtaining this information is probably not new information to many XJ'ers out there, but who knows.

    - When clicking the above link you'll arrive at a page where you can sign up or "Proceed to Parts Catalog".
    - Select "Proceed", but if you wish you can sign up as a member for free.

On the "Parts" page you'll be able to enter your year and model of your bike and review the complete parts list with corresponding part #. Extremely helpful when looking for specifications or replacement parts.

In my case I want to repaint my fuel tank. For the 1982 XJ650J the color name I found in the description was "Black Blue". I was informed by a friend that I should check out www.colorrite.com to see if they had the color match I was looking for. When checking out their site I was able to do a search by name, but found that I would need the Color Code to absolutlely confirm.

Doing a little more reasearch on the web I found a couple of interesting links that put it all together for me:

    http://home.comcast.net/~todwatts/Files/Color_codes.pdf

By reviewing this document I noticed the pattern. The color code was the last two digits of the part # (of course applicable if the part is a painted part - i.e. Frame, tank, side covers, etc..)

Also I found http://pure-2-stroke-spirit.info/downlo ... _codes.pdf which further confirmed that "Black Blue" was color code 004J and 4J was the same code found in the part #.

Sadly in my case Colorrite.com didn't have color code 4J available but I have other options I'm pursuing:

    - Have paint shop scan/match the paint
    - Continue searching WWW for someone who produces the color

Hopefully this will help others on their mission to find the original factory colors for their restoration.

Any furthers comments, links, ideas, suggestions are welcome.

Thanks - I just joined the forum and it's been great getting all of the valuable feedback.

I know of a custom shop that will apply the paint and it appears that you have the correct paint.

The real questions is - Do you have the paint for sale - say 1 pint? I assume 1 pint would be enough to do the tank and side covers - let me know what you think?

    Thanks again

Allow me to introduce you to our best friend Len. Chacal has most every part you need at fair prices and fast shipping. Just PM him with your needs. See supporting vendor XJ4EVER at top of forums list for a ton of information and a fairly complete catalog.

And so it begins - soon Len will hold the mortgage on your house too

    Welcome to the club....

Seriously though I doubt you will find one place with all the parts you need and the expert advice that Len can offer.

A great club to be in....

Thankfully I don't think turning over my mortgage to Len will be necessary to keep/put my XJ in shape, but it does place highly in my priorities.

What a fantastic bike. Been riding for 40 years and the XJ is my favorite. I have a 2006 1100 Silverado. It's just not the same......

Next time I'm looking for parts or advice I now know where to go first. I've looked at the XjBikes site for a long time, but never joined. I'm happy I did :)
