Ok, I've just about pulled all of my hair trying to figure this one out..Its on an '82 - XJ750RJ that has the square headlight as well as a square aux headlight. My question is; since I haven't driven this bike in such a long time that I forgot..Do these headlights only come on after the motor starts running, or is the headlight supposed to turn on when you turn the ignition key "on" and the same for the aux light after you flip the handlebar switch to the on position? FYI Still working on getting the engine running, it turns but doesn't start. That's another problem, but I'm taking it one step at a time and trying to solve this headlight issue 1st.

    Thanks,

    George

Re: Healight or aux headlight go on

On my 81 550 Maxim (with the single round headlight), the engine has to start (or almost start) for the headlight to turn on. Not sure, but the 750 is probably the same deal.

Just checked mine; neither light comes on until the bike has been started.

    Cheers,

Thank you all! Funny how we take things for granted until they stop working. Now on to my next battle and beyond!

Re: Question about the headlight or aux headlight turning on

    Guys
I was baffled by the same problems. Yamaha service manual (the written portion) actually says that the light comes on when key is on. However, the wiring schematic shows power to the headlight relay (coil side) comes from the AC generator; therefore, the motor needs to turn which powers the coil which then closes the relay for power to the light. There is a diode (in headlight bucket) for the circuit that is easily checked for continuity. And that's about it.
    Hope that helps.

Re: Question about the headlight or aux headlight turning on

On mine, the main headlight comes on when the key is turned to "on". The smaller aux. light comes on when the key is turned to "on" and I flip the little switch below the engine cut-off switch.

I had the wrong relay in place, blue when it should hve been yellow, thanks Chacal, up and running now.

Up next: replace the master brake cylinder with something a bit more convient.
