for about a month now i have been hearing this god-awful rattling comming from the front end when i hit any kinda bump at any speed. first i thought it was my light assembly.... nope than i thought it could be the front fender.... nope so i went taping around with a rubber mallet only to find out its my caliper. i have no idea why it rattling... should i rebuild it? maybe new brake pads? i know the bolts aren't loose, i need your help!!

On the XJ 700 there are two (one per caliper) anti rattle plates mounted to keep pressure on the brake pads. Perhaps they aren't installed correctly/at all at your bike?

Mine was doing the same thing. Take off the caliper from the
pivot pin not the 2 bolts, sand clean and lub the pin, take out your pads and the anti rattle plates and bend the 2 tabs a little more and reinstall. your rattle should be gone. Some say you need to replace the anti rattle plate but this will work.
