Ok so i put some drag bars on my bike...

The MC seems to be in a bad position now and the clutch cable is way too long!

I heard the seca cables might work?

Also heard that there are good other MC's to use...?

While i'm at it i should get a different clutch lever mount cause the mirror position sucks balls too....

    Any sugestions?

I'm in the process of doing the exact same thing, built my bars, the first set were to short, like 27 inches, so I made another set 29 inches. I know what you mean about the mirrors, I think Im going to get bar end mirrors, you see a lot of on ebay.

    mine are 27 1/2 inch....

also they hit the tank...... :?

might have to change there angle to prevent that right now they are bent down.... also if i use smaller controls and MC on it might fix that...

It looks like i might need to remove the choke and just add modified choke somewhere else....

    I'll let you know...

550, if you are going to use bar end mirrors get a set of Napoleans. They are kind of expensive but they are AWESOME mirrors! I had a pair on a 750 Virago and loved them. Solid, vibration free, and the view behind is unparalleled. Worth the extra shekels!

im in the process of drag bars right now, and i had a thought. the controls on our xj's are layed out almost identical to modern sport bikes. my 99 YZF600R had the same buttons in the same spot, but everything was more compact. and the best part... the choke was on the inside of the controls, and you pulled it down to use it. so if these controls could be adapted to the bike, you would never have to worry about the choke lever hitting the tank. all it would take was matching wires up, wouldnt that be right?

heres a pic from the front of the bike looking at a yzf600 left side control. you can see the choke symbol on the unit, and the lever next to it. the lever itself, when choke is all the way on, points directly backward toward the rider (as he sits on it) ill bet it would work, im gonna pick up a used assembly off ebay and go for it.

So It looks like i might have to go to longer bars as i really don't want to put risers on.... I just hate that idea.

Or straight bars... But I don't think straight bars will give me the clearance either.

wasted 30 bucks on these handle bars....

The MC is going to have to be changed for sure...

Here's some pictures. With the matte tank all that shinny stuff looks even worse. Gonna have to blackout that s4!t...

    here's some pic's

also the electric start switch hits too..... grrrrrrrr.... do the 29inch bars fix that?

scholz, are those the factory gauges that came on your 83? i like that setup a lot better than the big bulky square crap on my 82. i know as soon as i get drag bars on my bike, im gonna wanna rip the cluster right off. id still like to keep as much stuff functional as possible, tho.

does anyone know if the gauges like scholz's will fit right up to an 82? ive got that digital junk between the speedo and tach that i dont want at all. just need something smaller.

Yeah they came on the bike... I'm gonna keep them for now but down the rode i'm gonna go smaller.... maybe...

I have no idea if they'll work on the 82.... there might be some wire difference but the speedo and tac should work.....

Hold on to your britches :D I decided to add another coat of paint.
Well after install THEY HIT THE TANK! but the bump stops are close so Im going to add a little to them to take up the clearance, besides how often when you maka a turn do you go all the way to the stop......you don't, most sport bike have about half the turning radius of these XJs

Ok so you've got a different clutch lever bracket on there and a different MC... and she still hits on both sides with the 29inch bars.... what if you made them with less of a sweep back....

there has got to be a way to make this work..... without risers....

where did you get your MC from? did it come on the bike?

what did you do about you clutch cable?

My bike is an 82 550 Maxim, the MC and clutch lever are stock, could weld in a section that raises them up a tad. Iv'e seen some guys build Z bars, that put the bars further forward but then you start to bend over to far.

Don't like the look of the "Z" bars like the drag / straight bar look.... might

my MC doesn't cut it... might have to try a MC from a xs650 and a clutch lever from one as well....

it keeps looking like i might need risers..... That has questionable sexual orinentation

I was lookin at this post
    http://xjbikes.com/Forums/viewtopic/t=19847.html
And he has drag bars he got from jcwitney, and they dont hit the tank. I see they're not angled back as far as mine and probably yours too, I may build another set with less angle "straighter" to overcome this problem. :? by this time I could have ordered a set. you may ask this fellow what model number he used and order them.

I think i'm just gonna go get 29inch straightness.... see if i can rock that without it hitting the tank....

In his pictures it looks like he might have a riser and also his bars are bent up....

I'm going to go to the yamie dealer tomorrow and see if i can get a clutch cable that works.... also i need a new clutch assembly.... I'm going to shorten the throttle cable myself. The MC i'm still not sure about might order online. I need a MC for dual disc...

I had straight broomstick style drag bars on my bike for about two years. At 32" end to end they did not hit the tank. The sweep back is what kills ya. Now I have clubman style and they bump about an eighth of an inch. I just make sure they don't rest against the tank when she's sleepin. Sometimes I stick my gloves between the tank and bars if they creep over.

    Schols,
Chacal has (from what I recall) adapters for the mirrors to put them in the proper position. Hope this helps.

Ok so the MC fits great! Just need a shorter brake cable now.... The risers work great too. Had to remove the choke assembly to get it to get the left side not to hit the tank. Going to remount the choke on the right side where one of those lame side reflextors use to be and shorten the cable. Also The clutch cable and throttle cables will be shortened. Hopefully I can find a shop that can shorten them. Then the handle bars will be done.

    After All that's done.

All that is left is to drop the forks and do the sterring bearings, rebuild the carb's, De-rust the tank and finishes the leather work. Then ride for the rest of the summer before the serious repaint and choppin get's done over the winter.
