i dunno about in canada. but in the US we use a sensor in the side streets crossing high traffic roads. The idea behind this is that late at night the road with heavy traffic will have a steady green light until a vehicle approaches the light on the side crossing street, then a timer in started and the light is changed. This poses a problem for motorcycles because they are not heavy enough to set off the sensor in the pavement telling the light that a vehicle has approached the crossing street light. This is a pain because you either have to run the red light or wait for a car to get behind you to start the timer.....or else it will NEVER turn green. The idea behind this light changer is that it creates a magnetic field that imitates the weight of a large car to trip the sensor and start the timer. Whether it even works is a big question to me, but personally it sounds like another scam.......live and learn.

oh we have them up here in the great white north too.
but i think there is plenty off steel in an xj to trigger them.
the problem is more of a concern for the newer bikes.
they replace as much heavy steel with composites and alloys that aren't magnetic.
this is why lights don't get triggered

The lights sense the metal through magnetic fields ans mrkil said. The changers are rare earth magnets that will trip the lights but you have to hit the loop or be close to it. They do work but not 100%

i was actually stuck at a red light about 2 weeks ago now because of these sensors. Thats how i know about them..i researched them after i had to run a red light. MY maxim did not trip the sensor. In the US they are actually working on legislation right now to fix this problem for motorcycles...and even considering letting motorcycles run red lights after a certain time of day and a certain amout of time waiting.....how scary is that!!

In North Carolina it is already law. Wait 3 minutes then you can run it. I have had to use that feature a few times.

I have never had in issue with this stuff but i have heard of sport bikers with less metal putting magnets on the bottom of their riding shoes. At many light you can see where the sensor was dug in to the ground and if you pull up right over it i think it usually works
but then again i have never seen one of these so.....

So would I get the same effect if I just bought a $5 rare earth magnet on ebay and stuck it on the bottom of my frame? Just a thought. More money on gizmos=less money for rest of bike. Thanks guys!

Take the money you'll save not getting that Meter and the other money you'll save on the traffic light changer and buy your girlfriend flowers.

If the Bike starts ... the Battery's charging.
If the light stays Red forever, ... just Go.

I like the way you think, Rick. Or you could just skip the flowers and buy yourself some beer. The 3 min thing is just a CYA type clause in the legislation of the bill. If you see a cop or anyone else around, wait 3 minutes or until they leave. If noone is around, just go.
