I've had my '85 Maxim X for sale for a couple weeks on Craig's List and the for sale forum here. I've
had a lot of response with several saying they're "really interested" then not hearing back or they
give me a time when they'll be here to look at it and never show. Had two this weekend that said
they were quite familiar with the Maxim X then ride it and say "it's too small".

I'm about to say hell with it and part it out. It's in good shape with only 8,500 miles on it. Runs great,
tires have 500 miles on them, new battery, new air box boots. A couple small dents in the tank.

I guess I'm frustrated, but if I thought I could get enough from the parts I'd start tearing it apart.

    Any opinions?

    Thanks,
    Jim Dawson

My question would be "why do you want to sell it?"

I think you'll get more selling it whole than parting it out. You just might have to be patient. I've seen worse bikes sell for more $$.

If you had a backrest/sportrack and the chromie trimbits it might be worth selling those seperately but I didn't see them in the pictures.

Anyway, it'd be a shame to break such a nice bike in such great shape...

Because I have two other bikes and a wife that doesn't understand why I need three. :(

I don't know what your bottom $$ is but I know I couldn't get what you are asking out of mine and mine had new tires put on last year, new paint, new plug wires, plugs, brake shoes/pads, all wheel bearings gone thru, carbs gone thru and sync'd. Not a thing mechanically wrong with her. I have all the chrome peices (not in perfect shape but nice). You have to remember it is an 85'. Yes it has low miles and maybe the market is different there. But here in Mi the riding season isn't that long.

It also seems that there have been alot of X's for sale in the reasent months that have brought the prices down.

I listed it for $1750 in Craig's List, but I'll take a lot less now. I'd like to get $1500 if I can.

I'm in the process of restoring my 82 XJ650J. Everybody is different, but I would sell my 2006 1100 Yamaha Silverado before I sold my 82. It has become increasingly difficult to find good running/condition old school bikes with low mileage anymore.

My tank and side covers are in the shop being painted right now and I already know that if I ever wanted to sell it I probably wouldn't get back what I've put into the bike. Too me this doesn't matter because the expense of performing some of the same type of work on my 82 may cost even more on my 2006 or later model bike.

How attached are you to your Harely's? It today's market and longer term maintaining your 95 Sportser may be more expensive.

Maintaining an older Harley is really easy and parts are readily available for almost any age Harley. There are very few parts that aren't available new through a dealer. I can find any part used through several sources. They are also very easy to work on and the number of qualified independent mechanics is huge.

Yamaha shops are reluctant to even touch a 24 year old bike and there are very few guys around that really know what to do with them. I really like the bike but everything I have done to it has been a pain. New parts are very expensive if you can even find them. I'm just frustrated now, but I'm still going to sell it if I can. I'll keep riding it occasionally until I do.

    Thanks for the tips.

    Jim

I understand. I haven't had as difficult a time finding parts for my bike at reasonable prices. Wish I was near Alton - would love to check it out.

    Good Luck.

Fortunately I don't need any more parts except the chrome carb side covers, which I don't care for anyway.
