so i took out my bike and after 10 miles or so it died. It sputterd like it was out of gas and there was a little smoke rising from around the crank case. i figured out the battery wasn't getting charged while riding and realized that a forgot to hook up the ground cable from the motor to the frame. after i hooked it up i recharged and went out again. same thing happened. could i have fried the coils because the ground was not attached? i wonder because of the smoke.

Possibly fried (v common on these judging by the large quantities of Alternator bits at the local wreckers none of which as still useable
There are a few inadvertant mechanical grounds to the engine.. ie: cables ,shift linkage., so while it's possible that you accelerted the failure itr's likely just old aged dead. NOW you get to guess which bits you need to replace, stator, rotor ( ideally both if you plan on keeping the bike) as well as making sure the diodes and regulator are still good.
PS: Yama has V poor wiring and all too often the ground circuits (black wires in side the Harness) are melted messes.. You might want to check on that as well.
    Not Fun, but g'luck though.

yeah i just rewired the whole bike. and looking back at the diagram i don't see where i could have wired it wrong. The ac generator was fine before i did the rebuild. i will probably just replace the whole shebang

Test the generator first, hook your meter up to the battery + & - it should read 14+ volts & 2000 revs.
