I'm coming home from Iraq on Saturday. Wife is on vacation in ME. I'm coming home early, that is why she isn't going to be there.

So, in my never ending boredom here, I was surfing CL. I found a 1987 FZ700 Fazer still owned by the original owner with under 12k miles on it, running for $750. I told them I'd pick it up Saturday afternoon, if it is still available.

My problem is that I have an 85 and 86 maxim x, as well as a running donor 85 vf 700c as well as my rider 86 vf700c. I'm wondering if I can tuck it away somewhere in the garage. Question is, can you REALLY have too many bikes?? I'm addicted....

Oh yeah, bike appears to be in outstanding shape.

I need to build an addition to the shop so I can more easily "hide" stuff like that.
I found it helps to tear them completely apart and just stack the parts on the shelves

need pics....and I still owe you that temp guage cover!

Your timing is good though!...she will be so excited to see you that she might not notice the FZ

tell her it's an investment. in today's economy it's necessary to diversify your funds as much as possible. gold, silver, commodities, bikes
    sounds about right

looks like the mirrors are missing. I've been in touch with the folks that own it several times already. I'm told that the guy that owns it got it to run, and it may not need the fuel pump....I'd go nuts if that is the case...I've always wanted one of these little monsters...

It's a hobby, can you have to many bikes? I have 4 in my shop, and at least that many more in parts stored in boxed on the shelves.

Don't worry about the bike. Bikes are like guns. Most women can't tell one from another so you just tell her that you've had the bike forever. Once you get more than two bikes you should be safe. My wife has no idea how many guns are in the house but she does know I only have one bike. I need more bikes. Excuse me while I go check Craigslist and Kijiji.

I'm lucky. My Wife started riding before me and I started in '71. LOL She says the proper number of bikes to own is 6, with 2 of them being her's. :)

Agree with RangerG on this one. Once you have four or five of something, especially things out in the garage like tools or another bike, the better half won't pick up on another one being there. It's OK cause they do the same thing to us with shoes and dresses.

You're coming home from Iraq and you really think your wife is going to notice one more bike in the garage?

I think it will be a few days before she realizes it, and by then you can't take it back ^^

Dude, welcome home and buy the bike. It's a darn good machine (excellent lineage in the Fazer). Tell her that you are looking at different riding positions and this is an experiment to see if you can find a posture you like. I'd suggest you examine what you do and don't like about what you have and look toward offloading what you don't like as much as the two you want to keep.
And thank you for keeping your head down. We all want you home safe!

BINGO!! He hit the nail on the head. Oh ..she might notice it in about six months. One day she be trying to figure out why the garage looks fuller/more cluttered than before. She'll spy that 'new' bike and think.. "I don't remember that bike being there.." and when she asks sbout it, you can truthfully say "I got that bike a long time ago.." for the record, once 42 days have passed it is officially 'a long time" :D 8)

p.s. And yes Welcome Home and thank you for service. I am indebted to you!

You guys make me laugh. Good posting

That_guy I put winchestertonfieldville on there from Mr Deeds. I'm from Winchester VA. Just a play on words. My wife will ask me " how many bikes do you have now?" and she says she can't keep track. How in the world do you think I snuck the tikka 25-06, and my Kimber Custom II by here in the same month...she can't tell the guns apart. I do have to do something though. Five bikes??? yikes.

Oh yeah, and I'm looking for a 94-97 vfr 750 if you know of anyone who has one, that and a 99 cbr 600 f4. Will it never end??

In the guitar forum I frequent there is a term called GAS (gear acquisition syndrome), as in, "I'm GASSING for a new telcaster".

I guess here it could be called BAS.

I'm BASSING for a 650 turbo right now.

My wife still hasn't noticed that I replaced my computer six months ago. It was a freebee though, so cash won't be a factor.

FAZERs ROCK! Buddy of mine had one years ago, they scream! And they are actually quite rare. You don't see too many of them. I think the secret is not to let her see all of them at the same time:). Before I got married, I had my '81 Seca 750, my '84 Honda Sabre, and then I bought my '05 Anniversary V-Max brand new, my then girlfriend-now wife, did not realize when we were riding the V-Max that I had bought another motorcycle until one day we were at my house and we went out to the detached garage (had my own house before marriage and we didn't live together until married) and she said, "Honey, you have 3 motorcycles?" And I said "yeah, I bought that one about 3 months ago!" pointing at the V-Max. So it is true as someone said earlier in this thread most women (most, not all!) will not tell the difference between motorcycles. I would also play up the investment angle, it is true, they are rare!

haha, ya its so true how some people dont notice some things, when my parents went to europe, I tinted my car, put on a new spoiler, and painted the calipers, my dad didnt knwo until the guy i bought my car said something about it (he didnt know he wasnt supposed to) but it really makes the car look good.

and my dad finally found out about my bike, i'm kinda glad tho, cuz i didnt have to tell him

and ya i want a fazer terribly bad

the number of motorcycles one owns should be limited only by his time to properly care for them and garage space.

I feel naked if I have less than two, what are you supposed to ride if one is down for service?

Three is just well, comfortable. Unfortunately I'm almost completely out of room so #4 might have to... hmmm.

I knew the fazers were not exactly common, and for some reason I have always wanted one. My first bike was a YX600 Radian. They are very similar in appearance, and that little thing moved too.

The Maxim X doesn't stand a chance? Really? I might be selling the other X then. But I can justify keeping it because if I have one little thing go wrong the my baby x, I can just steal a part. You guys have really made me want to get this Fazer.

The bike in the photos looks very clean and original owner? seriously? Wow, that isn't very common. Even if I have to put a little bit of work into her, I did a quick search on ebay, and bikes with over double the mileage and not nearly as nice were brining 1500 with half a day left.

I did get an e mail from the lady who has the bike up for sale for her husband. Apparently as of like 2 hours ago EST, he hasn't called like he said he was going to. I'm very excited for the opportunity to buy this bike. I'll keep you all up to date.

I had a fazer once upon a time. Paid $50 and had it up and running shortly. Never was able to get a title so I pulled the engine and stuck it on a go-cart. It was quite a shame as it had less than 2,000 on the odo but man did it make a fast go cart. Ended up wrecking it and sold the engine to a local guy through ebay. Delivered it to him and discovered he had 3 running fazers and 2 more he was fixing up. Always loved the "baby vmax" look of the fazer. They were made for wheelies and light to light racing. It was yamaha's answer to the kawasaki eliminator I believe.

They were quick but the top end was lacking. It will beat a maxim x in the 1/4 but not too bad and after that they are closer than you would think. The max is much more comfortable also.

One thought now that I am remembering more about riding my buddy's old Fazer; stupidest place for the kickstand. It was almost in the way so that your foot almost got caught by it when shifting. Anyone else have this problem when riding a Fazer? Or am I just that big of an idiot! Still a really bad ass bike, and I would LOVE to own one.

    I agree 100%.

For me, 4 bikes means one is about to be sold. It's fun to be able to pick a different bike every day, but damn, it gets expensive keeping them up! By the time you add up insurance, tag, oil, tires, brake shoes... you start wondering if your hobby has a 12-step program.

On the other hand, if someone dropped off an XJ at my door, I would just have to find room for it...

Just got an e mail from the folks that have the bike. They are both military and said they have a soft spot for the folks over here in Iraq. Long story short, they said that if I say I am going to be there on Saturday afternoon, they'd hold it for me and tell the other guy it's been sold. Gotta love the military! I look forward to riding this little thing.

I agree though, it is more like a 12 step program. I cannot say no to some bikes. I bought two running magna vf700c's a few months ago for a combined 1k bucks. One was missing 2nd gear. I switched the tanks and plastics on to the one I was keeping and that was that. My latest acquisition was an 86 max x, maroon, in kinda lacluster condition. I got it for 500 bucks. Got her running and replaced some things on her.

It's funny, because if you actually kept track of the hours you put in on these things when you go to sell them, you'd never even recoup half of your time. Guess it's a sickness.

Well, first of all a big Thank You for your service. We are in your debt.
Second, +1 on the fact she won't notice for a while. And then, you can play the "I've had that one a while" card....
Third, Yes. You CAN own too many bikes. I've owned five at one time. I can't keep five running, licensed and insured, though I've tried. Now I own 3 and my XJ is down for work. This still leaves my main squeeze plus a spare! 3 is a good number....
Lastly, like bikes, I've found you CAN own too many guns. When you have guns you know you haven't fired in five years, that's too many.

Soo, would three in good order motorcycles with one parts bike still fit into the 3 bike rule? I think it's a good compromise. Besides, who would want a vf700c missing second gear??

Well, got another e mail from the owner's today and they are going to hold it for me on Saturday. Awesome, I am so stoked. Not 8 hours after touching down in the states I'm goingto have yet another motorcycle. Now, I just have to sell my 86 x....

Yep, pretty rare. I have only seen a few for sale. There was one not too long ago in my area and the guy started at $2800. My theory is that many were wrecked.

    Right. Parts bikes DON'T count.
It's personal for everybody, I guess, but I wouldn't own any more than I could keep licensed, insured, and RIDDEN once every two weeks. It's motorcycle abuse!
