Can I replace the frontfork of my xj 650 maxim with one disc with a two disc front?

If you get a front end from a 650 Seca, it will slide right into your original triple tree. You will need to swap out the brake master cylinder with one that can handle dual calipers.

the master from the seca works but if you want to use the bars from your maxim you'll need a longer brake line. done it with mine

Actually Yama traditionally Screwed up with the Master Cylinder sizings on their Bikes. They invariably fitted a "too large a bore" master, resulting in the carachteristic Yamaha 'Dead Brake' feel.
Using the Single Master on a double caliper setup Corrects the ratio to what it should be (google for loads of Info on this).
May surprise you with the improved Feel.
At least try it, as you can always "upgrade' later if you feel the need.

My XJ550 Maxim actually has the front forks, wheel, brakes, and master cylinder from a 750 Honda on it. I didn't do it (didn't even see it through the crud when I bought it).
My first inkling was when I found this forum and guys were talking about their weak single disc fron brakes when I knew mine had 2 discs. Took a look at the calipers and found out I have a Yamahonda.

Stangely enough I have a 750 maxim with the forks and single rotor setup from a 650 maxim on it. It works well but there times when I wish I had the original setup. Though as a cheeper 'compensation' I put on new brake pads, master cylinder and SS lines to help things out and it was a HUGE improvement. You may find that just upgrading and renewing your components would get things to an acceptable level for less money.
