so my 82 xj1100 got sent to our local shop cause gears were grinding. found out 1st and 2nd were shot and all my shift forks were tore up. so i replaced all the bad parts and put the motor back together. not a week later i go to shift into second and the whole bike locks up. almost into a big crash. well to get the bike out of gear i had to rev the crap out of it and dump the clutch. now i have no second gear. gear was brand new and i was not rodding the bike. so now im wondering what could cause this same problem to happen? any help would be appreciated. thanks again

I have had 1st and 2nd gear problems with 2 of my 1100's. After replacing the worn out parts I have not had any issues. Some of the 1100's have problems and some don't. Sounds like you may have broken something in the trans. Pull the oil pan off and look. Search EBAY and you can pick up a god used set of gears for 50$. Also look on the XS11.com website for the trans fixes, the dremmel tool trick works very well.

My 2nd 1100 has the #2 gear slip out problem. I have been putting that off until this winter. I have been working on finding another set of gears but I get out bid every time I see some on e-bay. Just wantes some spare parts when I take it apart incase something is really in tough shape. There is nothing worse to have something ripped apart for too long.

Let us know what you find and take some pics so we can see.

    Good Luck

1100 trannies as well as all the first gen trannies (have see 2 550's and 1 650 with a lost cause tranny) were notoriously bad for jumping out of gear. My 1100 is a non runner ... so I am good there ...

However the issue you're facing before and after the repair @ the shop seems to be different. However a "fixed" trannt should not die in a week. 1100's have the unique 2 story tranny that can be inverted and fixed in the frame. Hope they did that instead of pulling it.
    Cool.

If you had a local shop fix it the first time, they should fix it again. A repaired trans should last longet than a week , if they did the job right.

Transmission problems with the 1100 were a plague.
The usual problem was Second Gear Drive Bosses.

Even under conservative acceleration and joy-ride shifting, ... the Drive Bosses couldn't handle the torque and disengaged.

"The Fix" was to Dress and Re-Face the Bosses with a slightly angular mating of the opposing surfaces that would cause the torque to Hold and make more close a fit of the Bosses.
Ramped or Bias cutting and dressing the Bosses repaired the Second Gear "Slip".

Look here to see an illustrated and detailed look at the problem and fix.
On SOME Bikes, ... you can access the Gears from beneath.

I just bought an '82 Maxim 1100, and seem to have the same issue with 2nd gear. I find that I only see it slip when I get above 5500rpm in second gear, then it starts slipping, so I know to just not take it that far. Is this something I need to get fixed, or will it be fine if I don't go up that far?

Overall the bike runs great other than that issue, and that issue is specifically why I found this site.

    Rukkian:

Your description leads me to believe you problem is more CLUTCH Related then TRANNY.

The Tranny doesn't "Slip" ... it more of a "Disengagement"

    Slipping ... that's Clutch.

That may be, but it is only in 2nd gear, which lead me to believe it was tranny, then I found this chat.

Knowing that I am newbie and a geek (I work on computers) what exactly is the 2nd gear slip out problem that others have eluded to - what are the symptoms?
