OK i just bought a new toy. The PO told me it was a 1982 XJ1100 Maxim, the title however says its a XS. What is the difference and how do i tell which bike i have for sure?

    Thanks in advance
    Ian

    ian,
My title says XS on it also. Don't know why but all the numbers match to the frame. That's all that matters to me
The XJ has "10M" in the V.I.N. number. Also starts with 10M on the right side of the motor. The XJ was only available in the U.S. in 82. There wasn't much difference in the motor. Most of the differences were in the features of the bike itself. If you do a search on the (XS11.com) site they have more info on the differences between all the XS-XJ models

Thanks for the help, its an XS1100.

From the info on bikez.com the biggest XJ was 750 in 1982.

    ian,
I have to disagree with Bikez.com on this one. The XS was made from 1978-1981. The XJ was introduced in 1982 and the XS was now the XJ. After which they stopped making it available in the US. It was still available in other parts of the world till 1984 or 5.

I believe the XS has three cylinders. My riding buddy has one.
It has a really cool unique sound BTW.

Yes The 78-81 1100s are XS. The smaller XS's were 3 cylinders and were called "triples" back in the 70's. Not sure if they were made them into the 80's.

The XS series came in many different engine sizes. 650 twin, 750 and 850 tripple and 1100 four cylinder. The XS1100 and the XJ1100 share a almost identical engine and frame. The big difference is cosmetics, seat gas tank , gauges and wheels. Post a pic so we can see it.

Had a buddy years ago with an XS1100, and as MLEW said, it was mostly cosmetic the differences. The thing was a tank compared to the relatively "sleek" looking XJ's; had a seat like a lazy boy recliner! Must've been a foot thick of padding! Looked REALLY comfortable though. More chrome than an XJ from what I remember. . . Definately post pics!

Look in my pic gallery and you can see the difference between them. The XJ is the one with the trunk.

Even more XS's were the XS360, XS400 (SOHC) and of course the XS400 DOHC Maxim and Seca

ok after some searching, comparing my bike to others pics, and a helpful chart from XS11.com i have figured out that it was in fact a clerical error on the title and it is in fact an XJ1100J.

    here is the chart

Thanks for the help guys! ill get some pics up as soon as she is clean enough

My brand new 1978 XS 500 had dual overhead cams and 4 valves per cyl and internal counterbalancers to make it smooth as silk, and a kick starter.
And a rear disc brake. All for $1,600

My friend's XJ1100 also says XS1100 on the title. I don't think it's an error... I think the DMV doesn't have XJ1100 in their system. *shrug*
