dont leave it in overnight... an hour tops.
make sure you have baking soda and warm water to follow up with immediately!

after that, seal the tank with a tank sealer and you should be good to go

how you gonna dispose of it? it is illegal to dump it

Here in Montreal Canada the city offers to pick up toxic waist from companys so people dont dispose of them in a badly fashion so no worries of dumping it I meant it was mixed with water in my tank.....

Geeez! that's a bit of Overkill ain't it?
CLR works "perfectly" and even it only needs to sit for a couple of hours to produce sparkly metal.
Failing that, Metal prep from an Autobody supplies store does the same except quicker.

I used phosphoric acid (sold as concrete cleaner) mixed with enough water to fill the tank and left it for an hour. It worked marvelously.

Does your fuel gauge sender still work? Did you corrode your petcock?

Or were you smart, and made blank-off plates from milk jugs??
And what was your acid/water ratio?

I used the phosperic acid (used to remove concrete off of our trucks) straight, not deluted with any water. I poured it about 1/4 full and sloshed it around for about 5 minuted then dumped it out and repeated it again. This stuff works fast and will eat a hole in your tank if left in too long. I followed that with a couple good rinses of water finally and left it sit to dry over night. The next day I sealed it with Red Kote (tank sealer) It worked out great.
You will need to remove the petcock and sending unit before using any type of acid. I made plates out of a aluminum to block the holes from the petcock and sending unit using rubber for a gasket to seal them good.

My tank flash rusted in minutes after dumping the acid. For the block off plates I just made gaskets that fit over the petcock and abondened the sending unit for the low fuel light (82 XJ750J with computer display that died a second time and gave up on it) still have the reserve. But no more rust in the carbs.

My gas gauges still work properly. I used an old tire tube and some thin sheet metal to make block of plates very handy I must say ... Again thanks for all the advise guys much appreciated.
