Hi, just found this forum and thought I would introduce myself. Just picked up a 1984 Maxim XJ750 with around 37,000 kilometers on it. Should have it on the road for Monday.

Really nice shape, windshield, highway pegs (Yamaha), backrest/rack (assuming Yamaha since it says Maxim on the back), well looked after, no rust, original seat, toolkit, etc. Runs real nice...

Just curious curious if the 1984 750 shares parts with with the previous years 750s? My taillight has a small crack and I see a 1982 one on eBay for 30 bucks; looks the same...

Also, anybody know a place where I can buy air/oil filters, more common parts (master cylinder rebuild kit when needed, etc.) for the bike in the GTA (online or in person)?

    Thanks,

    Andrew

Re: New Maxim Owener From Ontario Canada

Hey cool, the '84s are tough to find. So far, whenever I've needed a part I've just looked up the '83 model. I have a feeling they were really '83 bikes that were sold as new in Canada because of the tariffs the US introduced on displacements.

The Fram filter is a CH6003 which costs $8 at Part Source. Air filters are really expensive so I wound up buying a K&N which was more expensive but should hopefully last longer....

Post a pic when you can. I don't have a back rest on mine so I'm curious what yours looks like. What comes in the tool kit?

I paid $2100 for mine with 23k on it. I'm up to 33 now in just over a year...

Didn't look in the tool kit yet. Under the seat at the back in a little plastic roll, looks like it was never opened.

here is a link to some pics. Not sure if the tank was repainted but the emblems were removed.

Highway pegs and backrest are Yamaha, not sure if they were a factory option though.

I am assuming that the windshield is aftermarket. Didn't look for any markings.

Sticker on the side says manufacture date of late 1983. Ownership says 1984, so your theory about the 83s is probably correct.

Wow,looks to be in great condition.Nice find, and not a bad price compared to what similar bikes are going for around here.Just a little tip though, you should put your general location in your profile and the year, make and model of your bike in your sig.Just makes it easier for the fine folks around here to help you when you have questions.Enjoy!

Thanks, I added my location and bike in my signature.

Bike shows minor wear on the sides of the motor, but nothing abnormal for the age. By far the cleanest I have seen while searching for a bike and looks all stock (except for the windshield, backrest/pegs). Not sure if it is true but I read somewhere that the backrest was available as a factory option. Original pipes have a few barely noticeable scratches.

I am assuming the tank was repainted but looks to have been done professionally if it was.

Plus the guy thew in a set of saddlebags. He also was kind enough to drive it to my house as I lived fairly close. One the he said that I better not leave it outside for the winter. As you can see from the pics I am fixing up my 99 year old garage. Basically said if I am not finished in time I am more than welcome to keep it in his. He seemed quite sad to be selling the bike.

I am debating if I should get a set of Yamaha emblems for the tank or not...

I like the emblems but it does make it tougher to wax :)

I like that back rest. I'll have to keep checking ebay to see if one comes up. Looks like it would be pretty easy to bolt on. The engine looks nice and clean too. Good job!

I've stored my bike in our underground garage at the condo with fuel stabilizer, full tank and new oil. Fired up easy in the spring. Nice of the guy to offer to store it for you! Hopefully our summer will be extended due to the late start and you'll have enough time to finish your garage.

Thanks for all the advice and the warm welcome.

Should be on the road by days end...

Only thing I am still trying to figure out is why one of the owners had a wire taped to the frame on each side spliced into something under the fuel tank.

They ened at the bottom of the frame and were just taped up at the end so I am assuming something was connected to them at one time.

I buy filters for my 550 Maxim from a Yamaha dealer at Pine Valley Drive and Steeles Ave. in Woodbridge. Live in Holland Landing (just north of you) and work in Mississauga. The oil filter is available from Canadian Tire but nobody seems to carry the air filter. Even the dealer had to order it.
