I had neglected doing this for long enough. Got my feelers from my buds place, and started measuring. Here's what i found:

    Spec Clearances
    Intake: 0.11 - 0.15mm
    Exhaust: 0.16 - 0.20mm

    Measured
Left Int: 0.102mm Right Int: 0.064mm
Left Ex: 0.076mm Right Ex: 0.127mm

WOW, I bet you these valves haven't been checked in 26 years.

Every shim was Y265 except the Right Intake, it was Y275

Now i did notice something odd, all the shim tops looked prestine except one. Oddly enough, the Right Intake (Y275) Pic attached.

Is this just cause it's a diff size, or is there something very odd here?

Suffice to say i'll be calling around looking for shims tomorrow. I'm goin on a 644km round trip this weekend and wanted to get her in top shape before i go.

    Thoughts on the shim?

    Thanx guys!

You should get your shims from chacal. He has the Official Yamaha shims and, after market shims as well for less $. I don't know if you've ever gotten anything from him but, he ships FAST! and his prices are very hard to beat!

    Cheers
    Ken

I got my colortune from Chacal, but i refuse to use paypal for anything anymore, and the local Yammy dealer is a real nice guy, so i'll see if he can't hook me up.

If i can get it next day locally i like to do that :)

I do agree tho Len is awesome for anything i can't find up here in the great (white) north hahaha

If you are going local for the shims, just go to the Kawasaki dealer instead of the Yamaha dealer. For some reason, when you buy the shims through a Kawi dealer, they are $11.99, but the Yamaha dealer sells them for $20.99. Just ask the dealer for 29mm shims and they should be able to get them for you.

maybe your Local Yama dealer does like mine does: Pay for the Valve adjust and the shims are free . Not likely to save much $ but you don't have to do the work, which has value in my world :)

That assumes you trust your local Yamaha dealer. They're lucky I let them LOOK at my bikes when I'm in the parking lot.

Not a chance by me. Not only will the dealer not work on my bike because it is too old, they can't even make up their mind on how much to charge for shims. First the guy said they were $20 but I could get them for $6 if I traded mine in. Then when I got there, they said they were $20.99 plus tax and I could only get a 10% discount if I traded mine in.

No lord no guys, i wouldn't let him atucally DO anything on my bike hahah, just get the parts from them.

I will look around tho, i'd rather not spend 100 bux on 4 shims. Seems kinda rediculous.

I'm kinda lucky, i have a TON of motorcycle shops around me i can call like 6-8 off the top of head to check for avail.

I once read an article about shims vs locknut adjustment and the article said that the original intention was that the dealers traded shims. This never happened and they always charged you full price!!

Back to the PayPal bit, is it just the time it takes to clear the dough?

Many people don't like to use paypal because they are a socialist outfit and very anti-gun. That is why I chose to send chacal a MO instead of pay through PP. I also stopped using eBay completely for the same reasons.

about the look of that shim, that is just heat discoleration. my kawi had a few like that when i was running too lean. now, heat discoloration means most likely the cylinder that that came from is running lean, or was ran lean at one point in time. check to make sure the carbs are properly adjusted. and dont worry about the look of the shim.

I've used paypal, the day my account got hacked (not from a keylogger, i'm a computer tech / network admin) i deleted my account and never looked back. and will NEVER use them again.

I tend to not like companies that don't care about security.
