    I have a 1982 yamaha xj 650 RJ
When I get my bike running it idles @ 2000rpm [too high I know] ride it around and starts to creep a little, I try to turn the middle screw to idle down the revs but without any luck.
So will check for air leaks at the boots either end, wanted to know any tried and tested methods in testing this with carb cleaner [as I have this at hand].
I need to sync and adjust my valves, and I am thinking this maybe why I have a creeping idle.

    Any advice???

starting with air leaks is good. it sounds like you are pulling in air where you dont want it.

When idling carefully spray carb cleaner, propane, or starter fluid, around the rubber boots of the manifold and on the sides of the carbs where the throttle shaft seals are. If it surges at any time when you spray, you have a leak.

You could just be lean too but def do the quick test to check and go from there.

When you say the middle screw, are you referring to the synch screws in the front, or the idle screw, which is located in the middle but at the back of the carbs?

I mean the idle screw at the back......But..I have another problem I noticed one of my carbs is leaking fuel when I went to un do amd tighten the air boot to that carb fuel poured out...ah!!

I suspect sticking needle or float wrong position

Hi Thanks man, I'll try that, I had a quick look at the carbs again one float was way off and changed a needle valve to the original one as it was in good nick, I'm just trying to eliminate things as I go.

I'll tell you what I find

You might want to check your oil.

I took 4 qts out when I bought my 750.
The float for carb #3 had never touched the needle after the PO tried to rebuild the carbs and the petcock leaked.

    Hi
You were right when I tested for leaks the bike surged near the throttle shaft seal near carb 2, i broke the carbs apart and found the seals had been snagged and thus letting air in....a quick email to Chacal and the parts are being sent my way, give me 3 weeks and I'll be back on the road again!!!

    Cheers for the help

    Keep rockin!

Good old Chacal. Without him it'd be tough to keep these old beasts running.

I run a biker forum on another set up and just last night I recommended both this site and Chacal to a new forum member. IMO this site is a MUST if you own an XJ. :)
