I had posted the artwork for this side cover on the thread announcing Bill's passing but I thought I would start a new thread for this. I incorporated the artwork from the tatoo of Bill' son Steven. I machined the cover today and added the engraving. I still want to come up with a way to black in the engraving. If anyone has a good method for this please pass it on to me. Here's a pic of what I have so far. The picture quality is not that great - I have a hard time with shiny stuff.

if you want to black it out, do this. spray paint the cover black, let her dry 5 minutes, then take a cloth, pour paint thinner on it, then take that cloth, tough it to another cloth to make sure that cloth is just damp, not soaking wet, thus allowing thinner to get into the crack, and then wipe away at the cover, and you should be left with blacked out lines

    helmet,
Thanks. I wanted the quality to be sufficient that if there is an interest I can make multiples.

    schooter,
Thanks, I will give that a try.

Hey Micro...Nice work!!! Is that pic of the part how it looked off the machine? If so then tape off the center area so you only get paint in the 'circle' area of the part. Put it back upon your machine, set your 'Z zero' , then drop it .001-.002 and remachine the center area.
If that part has been sanded, then I'd paint and sand off the excess.

How much did it cost to have it made? Or did you make it yourself? I would really like one of those for my bike.

Thanks to all for the kind remarks. I am truly humbled. Ok, I blacked in the engraving and I will try to post up the pic. The cost is $65.00 if anyone is interested. So far the one I have is for a 750 - right side. I don't know if it will fit other size engines. If anyone who has a 750 and a 650 would try to swap their covers and let me know it would be much appreciated. Also, if anyone who has a 900 and a 750 would try swapping their covers and let me know that would be great. What about the 500 and 400 riders out there. Is there any interest? If so, I will try to find some covers off ebay - or if anyone has one laying around that they would lend me for a couple of days - just long enough to take measurements and get it back to you in the mail - I will pay shipping both ways.

Really nice work. Could you make one for an 1100 clutch cover? Mine is completely missing so id love to replace it with one of these designs. Im not in a big rush, just let me know.

Although i never had the opportunity to meet or even chat with Bill on the forum i feel like i knew him through you guys. Id love to show my respect to him and his family.

    Ian,
An 1100 xj? I didn't know there was such a thing. I'm sure I could make one but I would need one to work from so if yours is completley missing that may be an issue.

    micro,
that is some really fabulous work. i only had read about bill and the sudden news of his passing was sorrowful. for we have lost a true brother in many ways. and a good friend o the forums as well. i am saddened that i only briefly knew of him but everyone has spoken so highly of him i know his memory will not fade to fast. we all hold him in our hearts and minds and this tribute to him is so touching and reflective of how many we take for granted each and every day we live. It will be an honorarium to him and i would like to order 1 for my seca 750. also i would like to replace both side covers of the engine and am just wondering aloud if they are botht he same. havent checked it out. in the interest of giving you some business and directing sales to you and your work. there is a need for these covers worldwide as they are unavailable and maybe you can give the XJ'ers a discounted price unavailable to the rest o the market as a tribute to Bill. just a thought.
