first where is the dimmer switch on the 82/83 seca xj 750,my bike as I stated is either 82 or 83 seca 750 with the fairing...I have three wiring dillemas one light blue wire that splits off in the headlight area...what is it 2. an orange wire ,and a light brown /or tan wire both near the headlight area ...3. I just replaced my battery charged it for 5 hours or more, also replaced the lower headlight bulb with a standard automotive halogen bulb of 55 wats ,the manual calls for 35...could I have screwed something up with this bulb ?,my lights seem to work intermittently,I checked the fuse box w/test light and it seems to be getting power to both sides of fuse panel, the lights seem to want to work intermittently ,seems as if the lower light will have power for a second sometimes and then none ,do I need to rev this engine for a while to get it to kick up the charging system ? sorry for the confusing letter, but this thing has me stymied

1: The dimmer switch is the up/down rocker switch on the left handlebar and the light blue wire, shown on the wiring diagram as Sb "Sky Blue", is for the neutral light. Is your neutral light working?

2: I'll have a look around the headlight area on my 82 750 Seca and see if I can help

3: I don't think the bulb wattage would make a big difference- does your aux lamp switch on the handlebar work OK? The lower aux lamp also has a connector between the switch and the lamp and that connector may be intermittent

If you need pictures let me know!

seems like the aux. light switch is on the right the small one ,,they were working intermittently ,its almost like it has something to do with the new battery ,I havent checked voltage but I slow charged a brand new battery, possibly could it be a bad relay, what are the symptoms of a bad relay...and on tne seca with fairing is it under tank or on the right side ...and what thwe hell would the bike be designated again xj 750 Rj RH RZ what the F%@# is up with all the letters thanks for your help and pics couldnt hurt P.S. it looks like there is only one light switch on left...thats the hi/lo ? so I am assuming there is no on off switch and does the tail marker stay on all the time thanks again Ben 307 780 5658

Faulty headlight relay may be to blame.

    Hi, Don

Wyoben, you are right, there is no on/off switch for the headlight, the headlight relay is used to turn the headlight off while you are cranking the engine, so if the bike is running, your headlight should be on if your headlight relay and headlight fuse are good. The tail light doesn't go through the headlight relay, so it stays on all the time. If you have the original fuses and fuse block I would check there again, too. I am riding my 650 today and left the 750 at work, but will be glad to make any measurement comparisons or pictures of parts for you later.
