I've never understood texting and driving - let alone talking on phones and driving. Are all these people so important that they can't just pull over for a minute - the drivers not on phones have a hard enough time seeing me when I'm on the bike...

    Sorry, kind of ranting there.

Texas just passed a cell phone law to if you are talking while driving through a school zone. Also as of Sept 1, If you want a motorcycle license you have to go through a mandatory safety course. The also dropped the mandatory medical insurance law if you want to drive without a helmet, you just have some sort of medical insurance.

    Well it's a start...
I've said it before and I'll say it again. I'm not one for government intervention, trust me! But I would be all for a law that requires cell phones to have VDAC (Vehicular De-Activation Circuitry) that disables the phone if it's within 8' of the electro magnetic pulses from a running motor...with the exception of 911. We have the technology, I think it's time.....

make it a criminal offense and ill be happy.

    $200 just isnt enough.

vehicles should have cell signal sensors, and de-rate the engine to about 20mph when a phone is going off unless its plugged into the vehicles hands free. with all the crap cars have legislated into them today, they havent done that yet and its the one thing that would actually save lives.

zookies. i hav etodisagree with you'r 20 mph slowdown, what if you're on a tight packed expressway and everyones goin 70, and then some dill hole slows down to 20 cuz of a phone call, you're just askin for trouble. I say, if the person either answers or makes a call, have the car make the most annoying sound in the world until he stops the call, lol like in dumb and dumber, would lloyd's most annoying sound in the world make you want to think twice about picking up the pone?

What about the idiots that just shouldn't be driving? Texting or not...... Maryland has some of the worst I've seen second probably to New Jersey.

Ca. has had hands free law on the books for a year or two. Texting was just enacted last year..... Took an informal poll while out the other day and out of 15 cars, three of them were yacking on the friggin cell phone. First offense should be that the cell phone is taken away, second offense loose your license to drive. Wouldnt matter anyway's, do yo have any idea on how many people are either unlicensed or uninsured out here??? To many, the laws just do not apply to them.

Don't get it, should be a no brainer not to text and drive. Damned shame that some are so stupid, a law has to be passed to stop them.

 I say place a tazer effect on the phone that zaps the poo out of you if you attempt to turn it on when near the vehical. Or what if it sent a text to a MC website that broadcast your info on a texting while driving hit list were your rights to life and pursuit of happines have been revoked and we can hunt your sorry @$$ down and eliminate the problem! Just a thought...

More seriously, lets stay active and push the awarreness.

    Thanks

How do they "catch" you driving and texting? Visual observation? What if they pull you over and you've turned off the phone/put it down? I hate it too, but this seems less enforceable than the seat belt ("click it or ticket") law.

Maybe just getting pulled over for it will make people think twice and change some behaviors.

CT doesnt have a clause for "texting", but our law covers basically any electronic device (radio, phone, video games...) regardless of what you are doing with it. there is a second half of the law that will go into effect soon that covers food and drink. dont drive by an officer while stuffing your face!

its very easy to not get caught, but people are still busted for it. we have "stings" where the cops will be hiding behind a tree and radio ahead to a group of officers in cars, ready to pull over and ticket the people blabbing on the phone, without a seatbelt, or speeding.

also, at DUI check points we get a lot of people. they will stop a line of traffic and run down the line seeing who is rushing to put the seatbelt on, or using the phone.

unfortunately you can catch 99% of the offenders and it still isnt enough. this isnt just a problem for bikers, i have noticed in the past couple years the strees level of driving our race hauler has gone up due to people driving face down into phone, typing away and drifting into my VERY FULL lane.
