So I was going on my usual after work ride and cruising along at about 60 (kph) when all of a sudden !!WHAM!! I managed to hit a pot hole square on. As my jaw slammed shut and my boys bounced off the tank, all I could think to myself was, "Hey, my headlight shouldn't be hanging down the fork tube... uh oh" This line of thought was very quickly followed by a long string of curses that would make even a sailor blush.

I parked my bike and put the headlight down on someone's front lawn while I wandered down the road to find the missing bits. Turns out that the thud was the last straw for the welds on the headlight retaining ring

Oh well, I guess its time to do that headlight upgrade I've been wanting to do. Cept I now need to find a replacement ring if I hope to ride to the cottage for this labour day weekend.

So to all of you in Toronto, I know I dont have to say it, but, WATCH FOR POTHOLES!!! They'll rattle your bike apart.

    Amen to that.
    God you didn't get hurt.
The roads are trashed here in Detroit too.
It like driving a minefield- the roads are in post war Berlin like condition.

I actually think post war Berlin roads were better. At least back then the roads were dirt and the pot holes were bigger than the bikes... not so much pot holes as craters.

Far easier on the bikes and our bodies.

You might be able to use a rubber mallet to straighten the slightest rim bend, but aluminum doesn't really work like that- - you should get another rim.. They are cheap enough.

Roads in and out of my hood are pretty bad. No potholes though, they keep them taken care of.

We have the winter olympics coming here - seems like every road is under construction!

Hope you get your bike fixed before the weekend, jhicks.

I'm glad you're ok and the damage was minimal. Still makes you want to throw the freakin' pothole through some goverment dudes office window.

If it makes you feel any better my maiin ride has mirrors that follow the form of the tupperware farings. They are held on by ball post studs and metal clips so if they strike anything they pop off. If you don't modify the mirror with a stainless steel tether and you hit a pothole like the one you were lucky enough to scout out one ir both mirrors are likely to break away and hit the street.

Each mirror is USD $450! $900 per pair. (I'm not making this up.) There are no alternatives. Mine are tethered!!!

Not that I am trying to sell anything, but I have the headlight on the xj650 I am parting out if any of the parts on yours need to be replaced. I'm not sure if all of the parts are the same but if they are it will be here if you need anything. I think most of the parts like the headlight should be the same. It has the round headlight style not the square.

I appreciate it but I'm going to exhaust all my non shipping options here first so I can get away this weekend... but you might still hear from me.

I just repaired Schmauster920's ring from a similar painful incident (I'll let him tell you the tale). We've a spot welder that works beautifully. His headlight went sailing too, seems to be an issue.

So I'm back up and running. I headed down to the local motorcycle salvage shop near my place and picked up a ring from an 84 Max 400 for 10 bucks. Just finished the swap and I'm about to head out and take the bike for a test ride (who know what the missing headlight could have effected ;) )

Seven weeks ago I was out on my BMW K75s laid her into a very tight right-hander and hit a bloody great pot-hole well over 12 inches deep, the bike stalled and over we went. 500 LBS of bike came down on my leg, nothing broken but my leg was as black as Newgates knocker and I have been hobbling around ever since. The bike has a little bit of a dig and the hard luggage box has a nasty split but I think my leg took most of the weight.
Her indoors has threatened to leave me if I don't sell the bike and if she don't stop nagging about it I may just book her a flight back to the UK.

My wife told me if I didn't give up riding and fishing, she was going to leave me.

    Gee I'm gonna miss her.

In the UK, if you can prove that the local authority knew about the pothole, but failed to repair it, you can claim from them.
