Here is another question for the experts...

Took the bike for a nice long ride. Near the end I found that the shifting was quite rough where you could actually feel a little clunk. This is mostly on the upshift. Somehow I managed to grind the gears (for a second) when gearing down to first.

There are no issues while in gear. Just shifting...

Any ideas? I am going to change the oil tomorrow to see if that helps. Not sure when the last owner did a change. Hopefully the right oil is in it.

On 2 wheels... just lost my hat.
the wrong oil can cause the clutch to stick, but I would bet on looking at the clutch adjustment. could be the cable stretched over time and this was the end of it. try to adjust it a bit... maybe half a turn or so up top and see if that helps.

Sounds like a clutch adjusment problem as previously stated. After adjusting the clutch on my xj many times I eventually noticed a small mark on the clutch bracket on the engine side of the clutch adjustment. When viewed from a eye level distance the mark on the bracket shoud line up with the clutch cable. It is hard to explain without showing. It was never mentioned in my manual it was just something I happened to stuble upon when adjusting my cable one day. Once I adjusted my cable by viewing the mark and lining it up with the cable the clutch release point was perfect, I let out about half-way on the clutch and it would start to engage. If someone could show close-up picture of the side of their engine it could be noted where the markings are.

Changed the oil/filter, it was literally black. Probably going to take a few more changes to clean it out. Good news is no shavings on the magnet.

Now to track down my shaft noise...

I adjusted the clutch and it seems to have helped with the smoother shifts. I had it up on the centrestand and when engaging the gears the rear wheel start to turn a bit before I let the clutch out. Same goes for all gears. I can stop it with my hand and hold it. is this normal?

When on centre stand and engage 1st gear its NORMAL for wheel to turn, but upon safely trying with your foot to stop it should STOP. You can achieve this with fine tuning the clutch at lever perch. Hope helps.

Wow. I just adjusted my clutch cable....I was having similar symptoms.
Slight creeping feeling in first, and hard shifting down into first.

Backed out the screw a little, and TA DA! perfect.
