When measuring the valves with a feeler gauge, how hard do you try and put a feeler through the opening. On my exhaust valve I get a slight bit of resistance with 7mm gauge but 8mm is very touch to go through but does. Whats the proper amount of pressure?

Just a slight drag, about like pulling a loose thread from a shirt.

The valves are spring loaded so with enough force you can push/pull something rather thick through there.

I just did my valves so I can identify with your descriptions. I would say the 7mm is probably right at what you need to be feeling. If you have to force a feeler through at all, the clearance is too tight.

You should feel some drag; you should not have to force it in.

    I'm hoping it's 0.7mm you're talking about not 7mm.

I think we already he determined we both meant .7mm. And he adequately described what THE .7mm felt like to him.

In either case, I don't think I have ever met anyone that could overcome valve spring pressure with their fingers and a feeler gauge. 8O

Alright. A: Carl is a dirty old man; ask his wife what 7mm feels like.

B: True, you're not going to overcome valve spring pressure with a feeler gauge, but JAMMING it in there isn't the most accurate either.

All that being said, the range is such that anywhere between 0.7 and 0.8 still means a tight valve. Once you check the chart against the currently installed shim you'll see that being THAT accurate isn't really necessary.

Sorry, Carl I couldn't resist. You set yourself up for it. 8O

I didn't even know she knew you fitz.

    Too easy.......

FWIW, there isn't a "feel" to .7 mm or 7mm gauge. How they feel will depend on whether the gap you're measuring matches. That was the point I was trying to raise.

There can be a proper "feel" with any gauge. Whether that is the proper size gauge you should be getting the "feeling" with, the slight resistance or drag, is another story altogether. The original question centered around the feeling of a gauge when a measurement was taken, not whether the gauge was the proper one.

In essence, you have come full circle for nothing.
