    Hello,

I changed oil and new gas, drained all bowls xcept 3 as its screw is hard and i almost smudged the head. I put a full charged battry from my other XJ700N (fully charged). When ignition turned on i can hear it click in the battry area.
The flashers and brake lights, high beam all work. The neutral light does not come on.
When i try to crank with starter button no click sound but the oil light lights up and it wont even turn the motor.
I am supposed to revitalise all connectors/fuses tommorw with dielectric grease, any thoughts regards its behaviour appreciated. Coolant flush/change is on list too.
Also ignition coils check, plug check pending for tommorw

More than likely the neutral switch bulb is burnt, but ensure it is in neutral by putting the bike on the center stand and spinning the rear wheel when you believe it is in neutral.

I'd pull the starter switch (on the handle bars) apart and give it a good cleaning. Hit any metal surface with a high grit (say 600 or so) sand paper then clean off with electric spray cleaner. Follow up with dilectric grease. I'd go over all, and I mean all (yes, it's a p.i.t.a.) connectors to ensure no corrosion exists.

Did you take the carbs off and clean them? If no, save yourself heart ache and just do it now. Get a gallon of carb/parts cleaner. Follow the carb cleaning guide on here. Have an air compressor readily available.

You can always test the bike's electrical by taking a screw driver and jumping the starter solenoid (that is where you are hearing the clicking from)

Let us know what else we can help you with.

Test for voltage on the side of the starter relay under the seat that goes to the starter. If you have voltage with the button pressed you will most likely find your starter brushes are dirty and worn out. I just had this happen the safetly switches cut power to the circuit and you will not hear the relay click with them activated. It cost me 15 bucks at an alternator and starter repair place to have them put two new brushes in. I was out the door in under 25 min and back up and running. Yammi wants almost 15 bucks per side plus shipping. Chacal may have some available being my bike is my only transportation and I had to bum a ride to the repair shop I couldn't wait for shipping.

I'm familiar with Seca 650's and I'm assuming that your 700 is the same. I don't have a wiring diagram for it so I can't tell for sure.

When you hit the starter button and the oil light comes on that tells us several things; the starter button works, you have power through the ignition switch and the engine shutoff switch. We don't know that we're getting full power for sure, but the odds are in our favor.

The 650's have a "starting circuit cut off relay" It has to energize for power to get to the solenoid and that can happen one of two ways; it gets a ground through the neutral switch or it gets a ground because both the clutch lever is pulled in and the kickstand is up. Its important to know whether the neutral switch is bad or if its just a bulb. I'd replace the bulb and or put a jumper wire on the little screw terminal on the neutral switch and take it to ground. The light should come on if the bulb is good.

If the starting circuit relay is getting power and is good, you should have power to the small wire on the solenoid. On the 650 it's a red wire with a white stripe. If the color is different on yours check both small wires. At least one of them should have power with the starter button pushed.

Jumping the two big terminals on the solenoid like mcrwt644 suggested will tell you if your main ground is good, the starter will turn and that the battery can turn the starter.

Multiple failures are possible. My 650 has 43k miles and in the last month I've had a headlight relay and a starting circuit relay go bad. Both were intermittent and the starting circuit relay drove me nuts before I could verify that it was the problem. My neutral safety switch went bad and I may have an intermittent kickstand switch. I replaced the clutch lever switch 10 or 15K miles ago. Nearly every switch and relay in my bike has gone bad and been replaced.

    Hope some of this helps.
