i just signed up for this forum today. a lot of people have recommended it to me so i thought id try it out. i just got an '82 xj650j last week and found that the ignitor unit is bad. i've isolated anything else that was suspect and i'm 98 percent sure that the ignitor is the problem. probly both my relays too. does anybody have cheap or free parts? or advice? thanks

Welcome aboard! There is an 'I think it's my ignitor unit' thread that is filled with troubleshooting tips for this type of issue.

    http://www.xjbikes.com/Forums/viewtopic/t=9144.html

Having the ignitor and the relays all suspect is a little, well.... suspect. You need to troubleshoot down to the defective part(s). Throwing parts at the problem wil get HUGE $$$$$$ quickly.

Good luck and welcome to the forum!

    ruiner,

Make sure you PM our resident parts dealer, online name chacal. PM him with the parts you need. He is a huge help.

Oh, one thought, edit your profile so your byline (maybe it's your signature, don't recall) that's attached to all posts includes your XJ make and model. That helps forum members help you!

Copy that, Chacal has come through for me every time and under the cost of what other places would charge.

another tip is to update your location as many folks here are quite willing to take a short "RIDE" to help out a fellow xjer. check your home page configuration and settings to update the needed info. click around a bit and u will find it. also by clickin a person profile at the bottom of their post u can see where they are as well. Chacal is DA MAN. seek him first for your needs in parts. also ebay searches are helpful for pesky issues of ignitors and relays but not often available there. the home page here has many listing more so than a ebay search, check it too cause it has parts and wayyyyyyyyyyy more links than a ebay search return due to ebays greed and listing fees, etc.

so it turns out that all i needed was to tighten the wires down on the kill switch. they weren't making connection so when the switch was in run mode the rest of the bike thought it was off. so now i have spark and haven't spent any money on parts. thanks to all of you for the advice. it helped very much. now i'm going to put some 'sea-foam' in it and see if i can get it to run (it's been sitting for a couple years). i think i'm going to post some before and after pictures too. it mostly needs a good cleaning. but i'm going to paint it too.

yea its always nice when it turns out its something as simple as a loose bolt instead of having to go out and spend big $ on parts, thats how most of my bike has been so far. :)
