i'm not getting spark. i know my relays are bad. i'm wondering if there is a way to bypass these relays (sidestand and starter cutoff). i'm trying to see if my TCI is bad too. the headlight didn't work and i put a jumper to 'bypass' the relay and then the headlight did work. has anyone else had this problem. any info would help. i'm still learning this bike. thanks.

    -(sorry if this was confusing)-

    Hello fellow MI xjer,
    Welcome to xjbikes
Are you looking for component locations? If so I won't be much help until I get home my bike and book are there. I also have a xj650j and went through hell trying to figure out my spark problem. If you want I could ride down after work one day and try pluging your tci box into my bike. Its the only way to tell if its bad. Either works or it doesn't. And mine worked when I took it off my bike in Dec. but didn't when I put it back on in May. Talk about frustrating!!! Ok I'm rambling, the headlight won't come on until the bike is running. have you had the bike runing recently?
I'll check back in when I get home I have to make it to Shawmut Hills before 6 getting a new tire whoohoo
    See Ya,
    James

A relay is just another word for swich, to by-pass just pull the wires out of the connectors & join them together.

A relay is another word for switch, but sometimes it works by opening. Bypassing the side stand relay on an XJ650J will kill the spark. Removing the relay disables the sidestand switch.

If the kickstand switch is bad, the starter won't engage. If it turns over but no spark it could be the kick stand relay. It is normally closed which grounds out the ignition system. To see if it's bad simply remove it. You don't have to jump anything. There could be other problems that cause no spark such as a bad CDI.

If the starter is engaging, the starter cutoff relay is probably good.

The engine has to start before the headlight will work. It gets its initial power straight from the alternator, but after the alternator closes the relay, it can get it's power from the normal circuit and will stay on until you turn off the ignition.

    Hope that helps,
    Mike

ok, so i did all of that and made sure all the other parts weren't suspect (coils and such). still no spark. WELLLLL. it turns out i'm stupid. when i first got the bike it was missing the start button. so i took that whole assembly apart to see how it worked. when i put it back together i didn't tighten the screws into the actual kill switch tight enough. so the whole time that i didn't have spark the bike kill switch was off. of course i wouldn't get spark, right? so i tightened those screws and i DID get spark. so thanks for everyone's help and i'm sorry i wasted anyone's time.
now it won't start though. i'm pretty sure it's the carbs. has anyone heard of sea-foam? i've heard it's a miracle worker for carbs. anyway, i'll keep posting my progress and probly some before and after pics too.
    i love this site
