Back in 1990 I bought my first bike, an '81 Yamaha Maxim 550. In 1997 I bought my 6th bike, an '83 Yamaha Maxim 750. And not long after that I joined the old XJOwners online forum. I even met up with a fellow Maxim 750 owner at Sturgis in 1999 (I rode from Ann Arbor and he came straight down from Canada). On the way home I iron-butted my Maxim 750 on a 1115 mile trek back home in 21 hours and 15 minutes (had to cruise into Minnesota and Wisconsin and down thru Chicago in order to make it over 1000 miles). I currently ride a 2000 Victory V92SC.

My wife (of 2.5 months) just got her MC endorsement. So I went looking for a used bike for her to start out on...and I had eyes only for a Maxim. On Sept 1st, 2009 I picked up an '82 Yamaha Maxim 650 that is in rather good shape, complete with highway bars, pegs, and saddlebags. She insured and registered it yesterday and tomorrow I am taking her (and our daughter) on a ride before I have to go to work. I figured with the addition of the new Maxim that I'd log back onto the XJOwners site only to find that it had been absorbed by XJBikes. Very nice site here and I hope that I can contribute. And I am looking forward to doing a little wrenching on the XJ to get it in tip-top shape.

    The new ride.

I rode it after I got it home and even rode it to her work to greet her. But this is her maiden voyage on it.

This morning I adjusted the handlebars, bar controls and mirrors specifically for my wife. Then I put the license plate on, topped off the gas and oil, checked and filled the tires to 32/36 psi...and she put 120 miles on it while I had our daughter on my Victory. She looks really good going down the road...and the bike ain't that bad either. I kept her off the highway and out of the cities as much as possible until she gets comfortable (mainly riding thru farm country). We even hit a small patch of dirt road and a little fresh self-pave gravel. She did awesome for her first real ride. We all had a great time and I'm looking forward to our next ride together.

My husband likes it that I'm on my own bike now. Learning to ride has also taught me to be a better passenger. Even though I thought I was a good one already. Not that I've been on back much (only once!) Once you get the full view sans back of helmet, it's pretty hard to sit back and go along for the ride! I hope your wife enjoys hers as much as I'm enjoying mine.
