Bike starts up when it is cold first shot. When i ride the bike for awhile and shut it down it won,t start again and sounds like the starter is slippin and spinning. Mostly when the bike is hot. Is this a oil issue? starter issue? Or god forbid starter clutch? And feedback would be helpful. Oh the bike is the 82 750 xj maxim  :(

simple question.. what oil are you running?
these things are finicky about the oil in them.
    no synthetics... 20/50 or 20/40 I think.
if you give it a tap with a hammer on the right side where the starter mounts, will it spin the bike over? if so, it could be the clutch sticking. oil might help it, but not sure.
other XJ'ers might be able to give a better answer on it

Just bought the bike recently. Not sure what the previous owner was running for oil. I noticed it was low so i topped it off with motorcycle oil designed for wet clutch i got at VIP.Don,t remember brand or viscosity. Probably the wrong stuff. Damm. Was gonna give it a complete oil change but PO said he gave it one recently and it did,nt need one. Talked to yamaha mechanic on the phone and he said get rid of the oil and and put 20--50 in and hope for the best. I,am gonna do that today and keep my fingers crossed. Realy don,t wanna play around with the startor clutch. Apparently thats alot of work and $.

they can be a lot of work. I thought I had seen a few starters on ebay recently if you want to go that route.
Also, PM chacal, he may have one for you as well.

If it,s the starter clutch i heard i might as well junk the bike cause it cost like 1,200.00 to fix. The cases need to be split and pretty much gotta take the whole thing apart. I only paid 1,300.00 for the bike. I wish it was just the starter that would be pretty easy to fix. I,am gonna go change the oil right now and hope for the best. Thanks for your help and input.

it wont cost that much to repair it. dunno who quoted you that price, but that seems steep to say the least.
I know there are a few members here that have done it and could easily walk you through it.

I changed the oil and it,s still doing it. Damm.. Sucks! As soon as the bike warms up it seems i shut it down and it does,nt want to start again. Sounds like it,s spinning and not engageing or something. Can,t take the bike anywhere for a long ride cause if i stall out at a red light or something and once the bike is warm it won,t start again then i,am stranded. Realy puts a damper on my riding! Any info or help from anybody would be great.. Thanks

how long did you ride it before you checked it?

can you bump the button and get it to engage after a few bumps? it might be catching at a spot.

Something is not right. Changed oil and filter then started and let it run for 5 min to get oil in fiter and then checked level and topped off oil to the top line like i,am supposed to. Then started the bike and ran it about 15 min to warm up bike and then shut down and tried to start again and it would,nt. Sounds like it,s spinning and not engageing. Then i could,nt start it so i let it sit for about 20 to 30 min and tried to start again and it started. Weird. Something is definately slipping. I,am starting to think starter clutch. Realy sucks! I hav,nt tried to tap on anything while i try to start it yet but something is definately wrong..

If you used an oil with "Friction Modifiers" it could take awhile to get the film off of every thing. I suggest get it running and take it for a long ride. Change the oil when you get back and try it again the next day and you will repeat this a few times to get it out.

    Good Luck

Ya i already planed on doing that. I just changed the oil and filter. I,am gonna take it for a long ride and hopefully i don,t stall it. lol I,am gonna change the oil again after minus the filter of course since it,s brand new. Kinda makes since cause after the bike cools down and the oil settles it starts right up. It,s only when it,s hot it seems when the oil is still all over everything is when it slips. I,ll try anything first before i deal with that startor clutch deal. Hopefuly that is the problem. Thanks for your imput.. Paul

lmao. Your a funny guy.lol Maybee if they get stuck behind me at a red light they will get tired of waiting and get out and push me so i can jump start it. lol No seriously i think that MN--Maxim is onto something with the film on everything. I,ll change the oil 3 or 4 times if i have to and see if it works. Oil is cheep and it,s worth a shot. Definately better than the alternative. lol
