Can you rephrase the question? I think you are saying there is a cut out device, which, if you bypass it the bike starts?

Try your manual or google for a free download.

If you google your bike and put "free manual" there will probably be one. Thats how I got my Haynes manual - only problem is Haynes just aren't anything like they used to be. I am overhauling my swing arm linkages - the manual says "Take to your dealer"!

It sounds like the relay that stops you starting the bike with the sidestand down or stops you starting it in gear unless the clutch is in.

As someone who rode off with the sidestand down with a girl on the back I was trying to impress, I'd try to fix it!!!

Post a photo of the bike and some US experts will be able to tell you.

I believe - from this site - there were import restrictions in the 80's so it could be a 700.

On 2 wheels... just lost my hat.
the restrictions were only for the US... we got the 700, everyone else got the 750cc model.

I was wondering if this bike was imported into the UK as I don't think they were called "Maxim"for the UK market - thats why I suggested maxim85 posted a pic.

    Appears to be a 1983 XJ750 Maxim.

YOU NEED TO LOOK AT THE NUMBERS STAMPED INTO THE STEERING NECK FRAME TUBE, RIGHT SIDE, TO BE SURE. It's the only way you'll ever be able to tell for sure.

You should also look at the engine number, stamped into the flat, ribbed rectangular "pad" on the crankcase upper shell, just behind the clutch cover area.

Judging from the photograph above, I will bet you $100,000 that the bike you have is NOT an XJ700 model.

The "log book" is just a piece of paper, and subject to change, mis-interpretation, or mis-representation. The stamped numbers into the hard steel frame of the bike---in the headpipe---is much less easy to change, copy incorrectly, or mis-represent what the bike actually is.
